How to Get Your Money’s Worth With a Turtleneck

One thing I like is making a basic outfit unique in some way.  That’s how you show your true self:  by adding a touch that’s uniquely you.  So as I provide possibilities for you to create new outfits from basic wardrobe pieces, it’s up to you to choose what you love best.  Today’s basic is a turtleneck.  Following are the style elements of it, how to accessorize it, different ways to wear it in general and outfit combinations using a turtleneck.  There’s plenty of food for thought…and creativity…with just a simple turtleneck!  So take a look at what I have come up with.  My hope is that my ideas will help you to find more ways to use your turtlenecks than you ever did before.  And the more times you wear and enjoy them, the less your cost per wear.  Let’s see how you can get your money’s worth out of a turtleneck.

Turtlenecks are a Winter staple because they are so warm, of course! They add coverage too, so age doesn’t matter.  Now, let’s get started!

The Style Elements of a Turtleneck

A turtleneck is a layering piece that can go under just about anything.

A black turtleneck is a basic that makes anything look urban chic.

Wear turtlenecks like you would statement necklaces. A bright turtleneck will bring a dose of color to a neutral outfit.

How to Accessorize a Turtleneck Sweater

You can make your outfit more interesting with accessories like necklaces, bracelets, earrings, scarves and belts.  Go for layered necklaces, multiple bangles and/or a colorful scarf.

Examples:

• Add long bead necklaces or coin necklaces to a turtleneck tunic + leggings.
• Wear your favorite necklace, such as:  long pendant necklaces, colorful beaded necklaces, pearls, layered necklaces.
• Add a long, metal necklace over a turtleneck for work.
• Add a big statement necklace over your turtleneck.

• If you want to draw attention to your hands and lower body, add an interesting bracelet, such as:  pearls, chains, crystals, bangles and beaded bracelets.
• Wear a gorgeous silk scarf:  let it hang loose with ends in front.
• Put your hair up and show off a pair of beautiful earrings, such as:  large pearl or diamond/cubic zirconia stud earrings, fashion hoop earrings, long chandelier or drop earrings.
• Add a chunky chain necklace to a chunky turtleneck.

Ways to Wear It

Wear It Over

• A short-sleeve turtleneck over a matching or toned long-sleeve top. Add your choice of bottoms, such as jeans.

• A sleeveless turtleneck over a top with sleeves.

• A chunky turtleneck over a thin turtleneck.

• A turtleneck poncho over a thermal top.

Wear It Under

• A turtleneck under a poncho, cape, ruana or kimono.
• A thin turtleneck under a t-shirt.
• A turtleneck under a slip dress or sleeveless dress.

• A turtleneck under a crewneck top.
• A turtleneck under a vest.
• A turtleneck under a sweater.

• A turtleneck under a jacket.
• A thin black turtleneck under a sweater, cardigan, jacket or poncho.
• A turtleneck under a cardigan.

• A turtleneck under a (faux) leather jacket.
• A turtleneck under a skirt suit or pant suit.

Other Ways to Wear It

• A turtleneck as part of a monochromatic look, in all black or any other color.
• A turtleneck under or over a shirt.

Outfit Combinations Using a Turtleneck

Start With a Basic Black Turtleneck

A black turtleneck is the most versatile and classic of them all.  It’s a basic piece that can go with almost anything.  And it will keep you warm at the same time!

1. A black turtleneck + a black skirt or pants.  You may then add a third piece of your choice, such as:  a colorful pashmina shawl, a tweed jacket, a velvet blazer, a cardigan of a second color, etc.  You might also like to belt the cardigan.
2. A black turtleneck + black pants + a navy blazer.
3. A black turtleneck + a navy skirt or trousers.  Add black tights and footwear.

   

4. A cardigan + black turtleneck + blue jeans.  Layer gold necklaces and bracelets.
5. A chunky black turtleneck + white jeans + a wool blazer.
6. A thin black turtleneck + a boyfriend cardigan + skinny blue jeans or jeggings.  You might like to add feather earrings.
7. A long black turtleneck over skinny jeans.  Add brown or black boots + a leopard-print faux fur jacket or coat.

   

8. A black turtleneck + a denim skirt or blue jeans.  Add black boots.
9. A black turtleneck + a gray or brown maxi skirt.  Add a long pendant and/or gold hoop earrings + black boots.
10. A black turtleneck + an animal-print skirt.
11. A black turtleneck + a turquoise skirt or other bright color.  Add a black belt + boots.
12. A black turtleneck + a black blazer + skinny jeans.  Add a long, delicate gold pendant + black ankle boots with a heel.
13. A black turtleneck + gray straight-leg pants.  Add oxfords or loafers.

A Turtleneck With a Jacket or Blazer

1. A turtleneck + a plaid blazer + blue jeans.  Add an edgy necklace and rings + a brooch.  You may also like to add a belt.
2. A turtleneck + straight-leg pants + a silk jacket.
3. A turtleneck + blue jeans + a moto jacket (of any material.)  Add heeled booties.
4. A turtleneck + a faux suede skirt + a jean jacket.  Add tall boots.
5. A turtleneck + a bomber jacket + pants.
6. A black blazer + a black turtleneck + blue jeans.  Add small gold hoop earrings.
7. A red or brown faux suede blazer + an ivory turtleneck + blue jeans.
8. A black jacket or blazer + a purple turtleneck + blue jeans.  Add silver chain necklaces + a skinny belt + a black ring.
9. A beige tweed jacket + a winter white turtleneck + blue jeans.  You may like to add:  hoop earrings, gold bangles, a beige cap.
10. A tweed blazer + a turtleneck + jeans.
11. A turtleneck + a jacket + a maxi skirt.  Add boots + some long necklaces.

A Turtleneck With a Cardigan or Duster

1. A turtleneck + an embellished cardigan + jeans or skinnies.
2. A turtleneck under or over a matching-color tunic + a tonal cardigan + a short skirt.  You might also like to add a scarf that matches the turtleneck + woolly tights + boots.
3. A hoodie cardigan + a turtleneck + blue jeans.
4. A red or gray cardigan + winter white turtleneck over black pants.  You might like to sling a black belt over the turtleneck.  Add black boots + wide gold hoop earrings.
5. A gray cardigan + ivory turtleneck + black pants…or use your favorite neutral color combination.
6. A winter white turtleneck + black jeans + a gray cardigan.

   

7. A winter white turtleneck + a black cardigan + gray trousers.
8. A turtleneck + any jeans.  Top with a cozy, tie-front cardigan and pull on a pretty hat with a handmade feel.  You might also add earrings.
9. A black boyfriend cardigan + a winter white turtleneck + black pants.
10. A turtleneck sweater + a cardigan in a complementary/opposite color + blue jeans.
11. A turtleneck + a duster + jeans.

A Turtleneck With a Vest

1. A turtleneck + jeans + a faux fur vest.  Add earrings and/or bangles.
2. A black turtleneck + blue jeans + a leopard-print vest.
3. A faux suede vest or a fur-lined vest + a turtleneck over jeans or corduroys.
4. A turtleneck + blue jeans + a brown faux suede vest.  Add brown boots.
5. An ivory turtleneck + beige pants + a brown vest.

A Turtleneck With Faux Leather

1. A turtleneck sweater + a faux leather skirt.
2. A black turtleneck under a navy printed dress + a black leather jacket…or use a printed dress with a black or charcoal ground, or even a bright-color ground with black in the print.
3. A black faux leather blazer + a black or bright-color turtleneck + black skinnies inside tall black boots.
4. A black turtleneck tucked inside a short brown skirt + a black faux leather blazer.  Add a delicate pendant + ankle boots with a heel.
5. A tunic-length turtleneck + leather or coated denim skinnies.

Wearing a Turtleneck with Velvet Pieces

1. A velvet (or any kind of) kimono + turtleneck + jeans.  Add a long pendant + hoop earrings.
2. A velvet skirt + a turtleneck in a matching color.
3. A black velvet blazer + black turtleneck + blue jeans.  Add pumps.
4. A velvet jacket + a turtleneck + jeans.

   

5. A black turtleneck + black jeans.  Add black boots.
6. A black turtleneck + a black maxi skirt.  Add black boots + gold earrings to bring light top your face.
7. A black turtleneck + a black skirt.  Add black pumps or boots + gold hoop earrings.

Accessorizing a Turtleneck

1. A turtleneck over blue jeans.  Add a long strand of pearls or beads.
2. A turtleneck + blue jeans.  Layer a string of beads with a long pendant.
3. A multi-strand necklace or a dramatic necklace and cuff with a turtleneck + maxi skirt + tights + heels.
4. Pile on big gold necklaces or large gemstone earrings with black pants + a turtleneck.  Hair and makeup should have a regal sophistication (i.e., hair smooth and parted in the middle, kohl-rimmed eyes, etc.)
5. A turtleneck + a printed scarf with a color that matches the turtleneck + blue jeans.  Twist scarf around neck loosely and let ends hang down in front.  Add earrings.
6. A winter white turtleneck + blue jeans + a pretty-color pashmina shawl.  You might like to just throw one end of the shawl around the front over your shoulder.  Add earrings.

More Outfit Combinations Using a Turtleneck

1. A turtleneck + a floral skirt.
2. A classic turtleneck + distressed jeans, a pencil skirt or a tulip skirt.
3. A turtleneck under a crewneck sweater, a button-up shirt or a thicker long-sleeve top + any bottoms.
4. A chunky turtleneck + a t-shirt in a longer length over blue jeans.
5. A short-sleeve crewneck top over a turtleneck with bottoms of choice.  Push up the sleeves of the turtleneck.

   

6. A turtleneck sweater over any dress — from summer florals to body-conscious dresses.  You might like to add boots.
7. A turtleneck + a pencil skirt.  You might like to add strappy heels.
8. An ivory turtleneck + a pastel yellow or baby blue short-sleeve t-shirt over it + blue jeans.  You might also like to wear a knit cap.
9. A flannel shirt + a turtleneck + jeans.  You might like to add a necklace.

   

10. A turtleneck + faux leather pants or skirt + a plaid shirt as jacket.
11. A turtleneck + culottes or gauchos. Add pumps or boots.
12. A turtleneck + blue jeans + a zip-front hoodie.
