Age doesn't matter.

Link Love: How to Pack a Streamlined Makeup Bag

For girls on the go, age doesn’t matter when it comes to the need for a handy little makeup bag to keep everything at your fingertips. The article from The Zoe Report, “How to Pack a Streamlined Makeup Bag,” caught my eye awhile back and I didn’t actually try out the advice until the other day.  I can always use more ways to organize everything and anything in my life.  It keeps me sane.

I’ve been toting around with me an ever-growing and overflowing makeup bag (or two – one in the car and one in my handbag).  Lately, I just chucked all that into a basket and tried to grab what I needed on my way out the door…which meant I didn’t always end up with what I needed and had to do without.

I just re-sorted my one little makeup bag according to the instructions in this report, and voila!  It all fits perfectly and I have whatever I might need.  Genius!  And my bag is half the size of the one in the video, too!  🙂

The Recommended Contents of a Streamlined Makeup Bag

Lancôme Forever In Paris Eyeshadow Palette #1
Forever in Paris Eyeshadow Palette by Lancome at Ulta

These are the contents of a streamlined makeup bag recommended by the Zoe Report:

  1. an eyeshadow palette
  2. lip balm
  3. cream blush
  4. evening red lipstick
  5. eyelash curler
  6. primer
  7. concealer
  8. black mascara
  9. eyeliner
  10. daytime lip pencil
  11. tinted brow gel
  12. a convenient foundation

My Preferred Adjustments to the Above List

Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain from Jane Iredale

As I filled my own makeup bag over time, I found the following changes to work better for me:

  1. I always carry with me Jane Iredale’s cheek and lip stain that works as a cream blush and a lip balm in one. It also adjusts to your skin to become your perfect color. It stays on while wearing a mask and even through eating a meal. And finally, it’s safe for sensitive skin. So that product takes the place of me having to pack the cream blush and lip balm separately. Yay all the way around!
  2. In place of the evening red lipstick, I prefer to carry my favorite shade that works day and night.
  3. I don’t carry a primer because my convenient foundation is a BB or CC cream which does it all.
  4. Since I’m blonde, my shade of black mascara is a black/brown or dark brown.
  5. A tinted brow gel isn’t enough for me; I carry an eyebrow pencil wherever I go and preferably with a brow powder on the other side of the wand.
  6. I never use an eyelash curler, so it just takes up space in my purse. What I absolutely must have with me at all times is a nail clipper and emery board!
Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

I’m sure you will have your own ideas on what your preferences are that would work better for you than the original list. But I found this to be a big help in keeping my makeup from cluttering my bags, especially if I do a periodic purge of encroaching items!

  • Oh, it was such fun to see this post, Angie! I have that except same Vintage makeup bag that I bought 4 or 5 years ago. It is so cute that I use it occasionally as a clutch in the summer. And I have that Lancome palette as well! Love this!

    • Glad you like it! But what do Beauty Influencer like you put into your makeup bag that you carry with you every day? I’d love to know!

        • That’s less than the dozen things Rachel Zoe recommends! Impressive that you only need about eight things in your makeup bag. But that may be because you do your full makeup before you go…and perhaps don’t go straight from work to evening. I, myself, am hardly ever fully ready when I leave the house so I have to have more on hand.

  • Ugh. I was just thinking about my travel makeup bag last week. I normally don’t carry makeup around with me in my purse. Just a lip gloss and Chapstick. But my travel makeup bag is a hot mess right now. That was a great article with lots of good ideas. Thank you!!
