We can all admit that color sets a mood.  Each of us has our favorite color, which may have changed during our lifetime.  And each of us has our own natural coloring we were born with that causes us to look better in some colors than in others.

In “Color Therapy” by Madisyn Taylor” on the Daily Om, she writes that often the colors we like best are the colors we need most in our lives.

Happily, we usually naturally gravitate toward preferring colors that look good on us.  Age doesn’t matter when we wear our favorite, best colors.  Because what matters is who we are.

If our style is a way to say who we are, the color component of our style also says something about us.  Although on certain days we might choose a color to cheer ourselves up or give ourselves confidence, on the days that we wear our favorite color we are showing our true selves to the world…and they get the message.

According to Bernardo Tirado at Psychology Today, the colors you choose have the following basic meanings.  These are basic, so it’s sort of like reading the astrological characteristics of your sun sign.  😉

  • Black – People who choose black as their favorite color are often artistic and sensitive.  While these people aren’t introverts, they are careful with the details of their lives and do not share easily with others…Wear black to communicate an authoritative image or protect emotions. Since too much black can overwhelm some, don’t wear it when you want to establish rapport.
  • White – People who like white are often organized and logical and don’t have a great deal of clutter in their lives…Wear white to feel peaceful, convey a well-balanced, optimistic personality. White is most effective as part of an ensemble. Too much can project coldness, isolation.
  • Red – Those who love red live life to the fullest and are tenacious and determined in their endeavors.
  • Blue – If blue is your favorite color you love harmony, are reliable, sensitive and always make an effort to think of others.  You like to keep things clean and tidy and feel that stability is the most important aspect in life.
  • Green – Those who love the color green are often affectionate, loyal and frank.  Green lovers are also aware of what others think of them and consider their reputation very important.
  • Yellow – You enjoy learning and sharing your knowledge with others.  Finding happiness comes easy to you and others would compare you to sunshine.
  • Purple – You are artistic and unique.  You have a great respect for people but at times can be arrogant…Wear purple to project wisdom, trust, release destructive emotions. Don’t wear it when you want to evade societal regulations.
  •  Brown – You are a good friend and try your hardest to be reliable and dependable.  Flashy objects are not something you desire; you just want a stable life…Wear brown when you need to work hard, be a team member or organized. Avoid it when you want to expend energy, play, feel insecure.
  • Gray – You are practical, timeless, cautious, successful and solid. Some shades are associated with age, depression, lack of direction. Excessive use of gray leads to feelings of being invisible, but a touch adds feelings of stability….Wear gray when you want to feel self-sufficient, isolate yourself. Avoid it when you feel lonely, stressed.
  • Silver – You are sterling!  😉  Silver is an off-shoot of gray and often associated with giving a helping hand, strong character.
  • Pink – You are loving, affectionate and serene. Wear it when you want to feel feminine, lovable, need to concentrate and listen. Avoid pink when you feel vulnerable, insecure, fragmented, are giving more than receiving.

In “What the Color of Our Clothes Says About Our Personality,” on Elephant Journal, Alex Myles says:

“The colors we choose are a reflection of the colors of our aura (our energetic field). We can balance our emotions by choosing an array of colors that reflect not only how we are feeling now, but also how we wish to be feeling. Colors are empowering and can help us to achieve a calm state of mind, as they are effective at stimulating and balancing our senses.

“Although many people swap and change colors regularly, the color we come back to time and time again, especially a color that feels especially comforting, is usually the one that is the greatest clue to our true personality type.

“Clothes are one of the things that send out the first impression to others and as Faber Birren, an expert on colors states, 85 percent of clues are non-verbal. Therefore, it is quite likely the colors we are wearing are subliminally telling other people far more about ourselves than we possibly realize.

We should always dress how we want to dress, regardless of how other people perceive us. However, knowing the effect that colors can have on emotions can help us to learn a lot about ourselves and also help us to understand a little more about those around us.”
