Age doesn't matter.

Inspiration for How to Use the Art of Asymmetry in Today’s Fashions

Designers are experimenting more and more with the art of asymmetry in today’s fashions, featuring unexpected cuts and silhouettes that add a modern twist to outfits. So I thought it would be interesting to take a look at these designs. Age doesn’t matter when you try something new!

This style is popular in various garments including skirts, tops, and dresses. That’s because it can be very subtle or very experimental (which costs more if you don’t sew) depending on what you like best. As asymmetry assimilates into the fashion world, I expect that our outfits will transform into a more cohesive futuristic look in coming generations. We’re just riding the beginning of that wave now.

I’ve already written about the many ways to wear asymmetric skirts

In this post, I’m covering asymmetric dresses, t-shirts and tank tops, blouses and shirts, tunics, vests, jackets and cardigans, jewelry and swimsuits. And then finally, I have a suggestion for how to create new outfits based on all this inspiration.

There are so many pieces taking on this form. It has been creeping in slowly so that I have barely noticed that this is becoming mainstream. Have you?

The Art of Asymmetry in Today’s Fashions

La robe drapeado long dress by Jacquemus at Luisaviaroma

The one-shoulder look in tops and dresses is a great way to start, because it’s familiar by now.

Dresses

Hanky hems have also been around for a long time now. So that’s another way to dip a toe into the emerging fashions.

Floret Twirl Dress from Sundance with asymmetric hem

The hem of this dress shows how a filmy material can make an asymmetric hem into something purely romantic.

Monika Midi Dress from Free People with subtly asymmetric hem over pants

Asymmetric hems go from tame to wild. When you love a dress or skirt with a high slit, you don’t have to show all that leg if you don’t want to. Just wear it over pants.

T-Shirts & Tank Tops

Draped T-shirt from Loewe with tan trousers

The only thing simpler than an asymmetric dress is an asymmetric t-shirt. The one above from Loewe has one sleeve longer than the other with the shoulder seams placed differently. It’s subtle but unmistakably modern.

We The Free Stella Tee from Free People with a midi skirt

A one-shoulder or asymmetric tee pairs just fine with a staid midi or casual skirt. Feel free to add your own style with accessories of your choice.

Wear more than one asymmetric pieces at the same time. The more the merrier! They layer well.

Blouses & Shirts

Silk blouse with asymmetrical neckline from Mango with white trousers

In keeping with the creative look of the blouse above are the accessories:  a big modern pendant, snakeskin-print sandals and an oversized leather bag. When styling asymmetric clothes, add the most artsy, modern and experimental pieces to the look as you can for a cohesive style.

On the other hand, you might like to choose your favorite classic accessories.

Jackets & Cardigans

Jewelry

Evie Jewelry Luna Earrings from Free People

Mismatched earrings are also included in asymmetric style.

Swimsuits

Avra One Piece Swimsuit from Miraclesuit with asymmetric neckline

I really like a one-shoulder swimsuit but there are all kinds of designs, some with cutouts and some just color blocked.

How to Take This Inspiration & Make New Outfits

Now that we’ve seen some examples of the asymmetric styles out there, it’s time to shop our closets. I actually own a number of things that are asymmetrical in different ways. What items do you already own? I usually write a list of what I have so that I can use that as a starting point to think of new outfits. And if you buy something new, you’ll most likely get the most wear out of it if you think of some ways to wear it before stashing it away.
