Age doesn't matter.

Not Interested in Trends? One of the Latest Is to Do Your Own Thing (DYOT)

There is no one way to be stylish. That’s why I encourage you to be your true self and I say that age doesn’t matter. Fashion is a melting pot of sartorial choices and increasing diversity in fashion with each passing year means that there is something for everyone. Trends often transcend the seasons now and fads no longer exist. Many trends are becoming classics, at which point they are no longer new except in the imaginative ways that we wear them. That’s why creating a signature style and evolving it over time is one of the most important and relevant things you can do. Wear the trends; don’t wear them; remix them; repeat them; reinvent them — it’s all good. The newest trend is to do your own thing (DYOT.)

Do Your Own Thing When You Get Dressed

The “Do Your Own Thing” trend in 2025 emphasizes personal expression and individuality in fashion. This trend encourages wearing what feels authentic and comfortable, allowing for a mix of styles, colors and patterns.

Celebrate your personal style. Mix and match different elements to create outfits that reflect who you are, your true self.

Actually, my mother noticed this in home decor decades ago. She said “Everything goes with everything nowadays.” I wasn’t so sure, but perhaps she was just noticing the beginning of something that has grown bigger over the years.

It certainly has been the case that the most beautiful outfit creations derive from mixing opposites such as high with low, masculine with feminine, different prints and colors, plain with extravagant, casual with dressy, etc.

Key Features of the Trend

  • Accessories can enhance the look without overwhelming it.

  • Choose statement accessories, such as unique jewelry or bags to personalize your outfit.

The Trend That’s Not a Trend

Most of us who are older feel we deserve to wear what we want. And we’re right! Turn that thought into a trend and we’re all modern, as long as we don’t overdo something really old fashioned. Just remember to add a new twist to an old look.

Stylish French women are not going to pay much attention to what’s trending and instead, they’re going to focus on wearing the items and colors they love – and you should too. Feel free to do your own thing!

  • I just read a blog post about women over 50 and what they should be wearing…neutrals…not bold colors or prints! Well, I had an eye doctor appointment today, and my eye doctor complimented me on my dress and wanted to know where I’d gotten it. It was Gudrun Sjoden, and she remembered from the last time. She said it was very unusual for her to compliment anyone on their clothing so I was special! I told her about what I’d read, and she said, “But, that’s just not your personality!” And, I agree! I love the freedom to wear what I want! Some may have thought I looked like I was wearing my mom’s housedress (remember those), but I loved what I was wearing. That gives me such confidence!

    • Yes, Marsha, I agree. I identify with the #IWillWearWhatILove crowd. When we women get to a certain age, we know who we are and what we love and don’t like anyone stopping us!
