7 Of The Easiest Ways to Wear a Blanket Scarf
One of the things my sister gave me for Christmas was a flannel blanket scarf. I have wanted a blanket scarf for a long time but hadn’t found one in the colors that I wanted. Well, Nancy gave me a classic black and white plaid which goes with everything. So that dilemma is solved! It’s soft and beautiful.
I am sharing this special post to introduce my Style Book, “Outfit Ideas: How to Wear Scarves.”
Now, How to Style a Blanket Scarf?

Flannel Blanket Scarf from Old Navy
How do we wear this bulky piece most attractively? What does it go with and how do you tie it? I looked up the how-tos and there are many of them online. So I don’t need to reinvent the wheel. I’m just going to review the easiest ways to throw on a blanket scarf and look good doing it.
For ideas and tutorials on how to tie a blanket scarf in more intricate ways, see my Pinterest board on Scarves.
And for an in-depth guide to wearing scarves along with outfit ideas, including blanket scarves, see my Style Guide on how to wear scarves in my Shop HERE.
What I found is that the blanket scarf gets used and tied like any other scarf or shawl. It’s just bigger. That’s a hint that it would be good to wear it with clothes that are streamlined, form-fitting, with long and lean lines. That doesn’t mean a body-con dress necessarily. But it surely means light thin layers, perhaps in a column of color.
Layer a blanket scarf for an overall warm outfit on a cold day, or just throw it on and snuggle into it when you feel cold. It can go over the clothes you are wearing or over your coat or jacket.
This scarf is obviously popular because it is warm and cozy and soft. It’s like a warm blanket or afghan in the cold of Winter, but for you instead of for the couch. 😉 And in the Fall it is a warm layer to put on as you go out the door when the chill comes on, when it’s not time to wear a coat yet.
It is more versatile than I had realized. With the warmth and style it offers, everyone can wear a blanket shawl. Age doesn’t matter.
7 of the Easiest Ways to Wear a Blanket Scarf
Take a look at how to wear it, in the easiest of ways:
#1 – Long in Front

My signature piece is a scarf or shawl. I normally fold a shawl or pashmina lengthwise like a long scarf and simply hang it around my neck with the ends in front. I always thought this creates a long, lean line and maybe makes you look a little taller. But after seeing photos of myself wearing it this way, I also realize that it adds color and pattern for a more interesting look.
#2 – Ends in Back

When I’m wearing a shawl this way and I’m doing something where the ends get in my way, I take each of the ends in front and toss them over the opposite shoulder so the ends are short in back instead of long in front. You can then tuck the short ends under if you like, to keep them under wraps.
#3 – Unfolded & Draped

Lately, I have taken to wearing my shawls or pashminas similar to my usual way but opened up. When it is unfolded and draped around your shoulders with the ends in front, it looks like a ruana or sometimes even like a kimono. (A ruana is a poncho-style outer garment with a central opening for the head and a slit down the front.) Worn in this way, the blanket scarf looks elegant and yet casual, and gives the vibe that you’re not trying too hard. I personally like to do this in place of a blazer because my style is classic yet creative and laid back.
#4 – Looped Around With Ends in Front

The easiest way I’ve found to wear a scarf is to wrap it loosely around my neck with the ends in front. You can do that with the blanket scarf too!
#5 – One End Thrown Over the Shoulder
You could also just throw one end over your shoulder.
#6 – Bandit Style

The traditional way to fold and tie a square blanket scarf is easy too. Just fold it into a triangle and tie it behind your neck. Or, you can bring the ends around in front.
#7 – One End in Front & One End in Back

You could leave one end in front and the other in back. Just fling it back over your shoulder or give it a quick tie to keep it in place.
And There You Are!
You may have seen all these different ways of wearing a blanket scarf before. If so, these are just reminders about how easy it is to add one to your basic outfit!

I do usually wear mine bandit style. I saw a video for wearing a large square scarf that I want to try. I have a couple of those that aren’t blanket scarves so I wanted a special way to tie them.
