How to Choose the Best Necklace for Every Neckline

choosing necklaces for necklines

It’s nice to have a guide handy for times when we might be wondering which necklace to choose that would go perfectly with the neckline of our top.  In fact, it’s nice to have a handy guide for lots of things.  (See my Pinterest board called “Guides.”)  Besides, I always believe in checking everything, “just in case.”  I think it’s always a good idea.  Age doesn’t matter.

Necklace lengths range from 14-inch chokers to 24-inch strands that fall beneath the breasts.  I had a necklace made on a 30″ chain once for layering, and I never use it.  It’s too much for just about anyone.

Your own eye will tell you if a necklace looks good against a particular neckline.  But if you’re wondering, here are the generally accepted guidelines for what goes with what:

  • With a round (jewel) neckline:  chokers or 16-inch strands that fall at the collarbone.
  • With a low v-neck:  chokers, pendants and opera-length beads (just beneath the collarbone) to highlight the skin from neck to chest.
  • With a boat-neck:  long chains or a long y-necklaces.
  • With a scoop-neck:  shorter pendants with volume or long pendants.
  • With a crew-neck:  bib or collar necklaces.
  • With a v-neck:  v-shaped pendants that fit right into the neckline.
  • With a collar:  short pendants or chokers in the neckline, or button up to the top and put a statement necklace under the collar.
  • With a Sweetheart neckline:  short pendants on beads or chains.
  • With a Cowl-neck:  a dainty pendant above the cowl or below it.
  • With a Strapless or any other dress that leaves a good portion of your chest uncovered:  chokers (they emphasize your bare skin, so they put both the jewelry and your body on display), pendants, statement necklaces, choker & pendant combinations, 16-inch to opera-length beads.
