Age doesn't matter.

Do You Want to be Told What to Wear in Your 60’s?

There used to be articles showing what to wear in your 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. Then I saw articles showing what to wear in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Then, once in awhile, I began to see a couple of articles showing what to wear in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond. When I was in my 50’s, though, I didn’t necessarily want to wear what was shown for my age category. For instance, I like a more laid-back, bohemian look than “a suit or fitted blazer.” Now, tell me, do you want to be told what to wear in your 60’s?

You can google articles that tell you all sorts of things that you cannot wear in your 60’s, and some things that you can…mostly, there are lists of what you cannot wear anymore.  I’m sorry, I disagree. I have found that age doesn’t matter.

When I thought about starting a blog with infinite outfit possibilities, I thought of those articles that ended with the fifth decade. That is not the end of a woman’s life or even her looks. I thought I could go beyond that to show what you can wear in your 60’s. But I now realize that it depends…

It depends on who you are (your true self), what you do each day, what you love, what you like and don’t like about your body. It depends on what the latest styles are and which ones you like, love or want to try. And the older you get, the more you know about yourself.

I like this quote by Annabel Hodin:  “Don’t ever try and compete with a younger woman on the age proposition,” she says. “Why would you want to when you can outrun them by looking sleeker, more stylish, and generally better dressed?” — from a very good article you might like at harpersbazaar.com: “How to Dress Your Age….”

Drapes, ponchos and vests that we can all wear! by Detroit designer Cheryl Zemke

When I was at local designer Cheryl Zemke‘s Holiday Fashion Show 2017, I went to her pop-up shop and was talking with some women who were trying on some of her creations. I encouraged one of them to go ahead and get something she loved, because she was afraid it wouldn’t be okay for a woman her age to wear it. She told me about an orange polka-dot skirt she saw in a store that she fell in love with. She thought, “but I would feel so conspicuous in it!” She bought it anyway and every time she wore it she got compliments. She’s glad she bought it. She laughed and said, “but I always feel so conspicuous in it!”

Fashion advice for the woman over 60: Do not be afraid!

Don’t be afraid to be noticed.

Don’t be afraid to stand out in a crowd.

Don’t be afraid to dress like you’re heading to a party even when you’re not.

Don’t be afraid to be inspired by what a 20-year-old is wearing. Steal her color combo idea, the way she stacks her bracelets, her choice of socks with shoes. Your version will be right, right now.

As I get older, I feel more free; free to wear what I love, do what I love, express myself, be my true self…and let it show. Your true self – who you are, have been and always will be – is ageless.

So, I say go ahead and shop at stores aimed at younger people if they have your size and have interesting clothes and accessories that you might love and want to try for yourself. Go ahead and wear whatever people say you can no longer wear at your age…if it fits, looks good on you, and makes you happy. Go ahead and do your hair the way you want that you think looks good on you and feels comfortable for you. And you can also go ahead and NOT wear what makes you uncomfortable or what you don’t like and doesn’t express who you are. Trends or classics, you can choose both in any combination you like…whatever makes you be you.

  • I agree! I am 61 and I still love fashion! Personally I found that colours are importuned. I buy my clothing where ever I see something I like! Even in stores mostly directed towards teens. I live in Scandinavia where people are a bit scared of bright colors, but I love bright colors, and have started to buy accessories to spice up my every day life! My hair has become very thin, so I bought hats and hair accessories! I still keep my hair long because I want to look feminine. I am short and curvy and love how the young curvy women have started to dress much more free, and not be afraid to show their body!

    • Hi, Marianne – First of all, 61 is not old! But I’ll bet you’re a wise woman by now. 😉 Yes, colors can make you look like your best self, especially close to your face. They can make you look younger and healthier. They affect your mood as well. And don’t we all shop at Forever 21 once in awhile? Well, in America anyway….We all have different face shapes that age in different ways, so we know best what hair style looks best on us and how our particular hair type turns out well. One of the things I learned a long time ago from Jane Fonda is that doing some exercise before wearing revealing clothes is as helpful as good grooming. Go ahead and show off your best features. You go, Girl! XO – Angie

  • I can’t imagine wearing clothes that don’t make me feel great just because of rules. If you wear what makes you feel good, you can do anything!

  • More importantly, I don’t want to be told what NOT to wear. But that said, I also look for and enjoy seeing content not so much about “what to wear” as how women who were cool/funky/eccentric/punk/street dressers in their youth are transitioning into second-half-of-life looks. Love inspiration like Lynn Slater!

    • Totally right! Thanks for pointing out how important it is to realize that there’s never a time to tell women what not to wear. That’s why I always say that age doesn’t matter and show your true self!
