Age doesn't matter.

How to Dress Like an Artist and Look Young

Did you know when you dress in a colorful way with artistic flair you project an air of youthfulness? See how to dress like an artist and look young by being yourself and having fun!

As I was looking at pictures of ladies who refuse to “dress their age,”  I was struck by the thought that their color play and artfulness make them look full of energy.  Age doesn’t matter when you have playful energy, because that translates to “young.”

So let’s take a look at these artistic fashionistas of a certain age, and see what they’re doing.  Let them inspire us to set our true selves free!  Start a style bucket list.  Wear what you always wished you could, but didn’t.  Do your thing!

How to Dress Like an Artist & Look Young:

Treat yourself as a work of art

Dabble, experiment, create a masterpiece of your true self.  It doesn’t happen every day, but each day is another sketch that builds towards refining your style.

  • Oh goodness, my sort of style ..l am a fluffy lady and feel my size means l can.carry off bold prints ….l live in maxi dresses and am proud to say l don’t own any of the over 60 wardrobe staples ..

  • Wonderful article!! I totally agree and at 72, I am having lots of fun with color, layering and quirky boho style, often making my own things.

    • Hi, Catherine – I’m so glad that you got my meaning totally! Yes, I believe we should finally set our true selves free. – XO, Angie

  • A pre-requisite does seem to be being on the skinny side though, everything looks effortless and attractive on a smaller frame!

    • Hi, Jan – Just like age doesn’t matter, neither does size. Not all of these ladies are skinny. We are all different shapes and sizes. What styles do you love the most? Just try experimenting with those things. Be bold, be your true beautiful self. You can pretend you’re a canvas and create yourself in new ways. Use your favorite colors and find ways to flatter the lines of your body. Best wishes, Angie

  • I’m no artist but have always loved to dress ( just say out there) my whole life (I’m now 73) and I can’t tell you how many times people tell me that the way I dress and wear color makes them feel good. On the other hand you have the other people who are scared s- – – – – – s to do anything out of the ordinary. Whose life are you living and whose writing the script but yourself 👍👌

    • Hi, Betty – Thanks for reminding us to live life as our true authentic selves. If we’ve conformed to societal norms in early life, we can at least set ourselves free as we get older and wiser/older and bolder. When I see someone on the street who is creatively dressed, it always makes me smile and they smile back. Haha! When you wear a creative outfit, it’s exactly like art; it makes people smile and feel good. And my final conclusion is that since it is lively, it gives off an energy of youth – XO, Angie

  • I don’t think any of these humans look “young” or “younger” than whatever age they are, some of the outfits I find horrid. Sorry. I am am artist as well, but some of this, blech. LOL. Just my opinion. Just live your own life and do what makes YOU happy, dress the way you want, if you think it looks good, wear that. I am not here to please you nor you, I, with how the human looks. Peace.

    • Hi, Barbara – Of course, go ahead and be your true self! As an artist yourself, you must be talented at applying that art to what you wear and how you look. I encourage you to enjoy doing that in your own way. My main point about these fascinating ladies is that I noticed how their bold and creative outfits project a great amount of energy. I’ve noticed that energy equates with youth, whether it’s how you dress, how you act or what you do. Once I was struck by their energy, I took a closer look at the elements of the styles they were creating and shared it. I hope it inspires others, even if they only come away from this article with one new idea to try out and enjoy. Peace to you, too, my sister!

      • I agree with you … those women look full of energy. I dress similarly, toned down, often out of place in my small town … but it’s me. And I find young women complimenting me or being surprised at my age.

        • That’s what I perceived from the widespread social interest that the ladies from Ari Cohen’s Advanced Style have been attracting. They are colorful and bold. And they look like they have a handle on the art of dressing themselves for their own enjoyment…which makes them look like they are enjoying life. They seem lively, vivacious and fun!

  • I love this, I have a few pieces but don’t wear a lot together. I like vintage hippie boho so lots of things around now. I am an old hippie still like to dress that way.

    • Hi, Rita – Your true self is not fat and old, but it is definitely expressed through your art. Focus on applying your artistic creativity by looking at yourself as a work of art. How do you envision that? Apply your knowledge of color and your love of certain subjects to your clothing (i.e., subjects such as flowers, graphics, fantasy, etc.) Enjoy your journey towards using yourself as a canvas! 😉

  • I am truly enjoying seeing all the different ladies wearing my kind of funky organic cotton and hemp clothing. I have a nice collection of older Blue Fish clothing.

  • I had a lot of fun reading the tips in your post! Thanks for introducing me to Blue Fish clothing, I have my eye on a pair of leggings… Part of their looks is layering, which is a challenge when it’s hot!

    • Yes! If you want to layer when it’s hot, loose and linen pieces like Blue Fish has are the answer. P.S. I am not affiliated with Blue Fish in any way but I am happy to help my readers find pieces to create outfits they will love. XO, Angie
