Accessories are the key to giving any outfit style.  They can also add color, line, definition, proportion and structure to your look.  And they can cover and warm you.  Age doesn’t matter.  Choose accessories that express your true self.  Then watch what happens when you use these 7 fall and winter style tips!

7 Style Tips for how to use accessories during the fall and winter:

  • Layer leg warmers over your tights or leggings for warmth.

  • Add a shawl as an added layer of warmth over a coat, a jacket or a suit.  Wear it slung over one shoulder when you don’t need the protection.

  • Put patterned tights with solid dresses or skirts.  Finish with shoes in a color that matches the stockings or tall boots.

  • When wearing a turtleneck sweater, wear a necklace strand at least 24″ long.  A 28-34″ strand is best.  Add a smaller pair of earrings and pile on some bangles or cuffs.
  • Multiple chain necklaces and slingback heels add a punch to a knit turtleneck over a skirt.  If the turtleneck has long sleeves, you may like to add a cuff over the sleeve cuff.
  • Fingerless gloves are perfect for milder fall and winter days…and showing off a great ring.  They look good with just a top, a blazer, a coat, etc.  (Brenda Kinsel shows examples, above.)
  • Solve the I-want-to-wear-leggings-but-I-don’t-have-the-right-long-shirt problem by tying a flannel shirt around your waist.  Add a leather jacket, and top with a hat.

I hope you will choose at least one of these tips to try and make it your own.  Are you inspired to wear something that you normally wouldn’t think to wear?  Does trying any of these make you feel more self assured?  Please let me know if these tips are helpful to you, by leaving a comment below.
