Age doesn't matter.

What Can You Wear that Has Unlimited Potential?

A smile is always the best thing you can wear of course, but I’ve compiled a list of what I consider essential pieces for a versatile wardrobe. Age doesn’t matter.

Although you’ve heard many times what you have to have in your wardrobe, I’m not telling you that you have to have anything in particular.  Because what you wear is totally your choice.

But there are items of clothing that go with most anything and everything in your closet.  And if you have those basic pieces, it should be quite easy for you to find something to wear every day.

Once you have the basics, you can add one trendy piece if you like and be turned out with style.  And if you buy the basics and the trends that catch your eye and make you happy, you will end up looking like your true self in the best and easiest way.

The following list contains the things I reach for the most, that can be combined in the most ways, and that are recommended the most in the world of style.

So if you don’t own these things, you might want to fill in those gaps in your wardrobe.  I think you’ll be happy with the world of outfit combinations they open up for you.

Basics That I Recommend:

Kimono Robe from Johnny Was

Kimono — this is an item that jazzes up something plain or a column of color (an all black or all white outfit, for instance.)

Little Black Dress — it goes anywhere, depending on what you add to it.

Black Velvet Blazer for fall and winter. If black is not your best color, try navy, charcoal, pewter or cocoa.

White or Ivory Blazer — a fine finish to anything in the spring or summer, but usable as well over dark colors,  sweaters and winter fabrics during the cold months.

Black Blazer — a fine finishing piece for anything.

Black Pants, any kind.

White Pants — especially useful for spring & summer, but also good during fall and winter with sweaters, dark colors and cozy textures; could be jeans or other types of pants.

White Shirt

Winter Coat — it goes without saying in climates that have a cold season.

Faux Leather Jacket or Blazer — a black motorcycle jacket is especially versatile and modern.  I have the following moto jacket and it’s perfect!

A Maxi or Long Skirt can go with any top.

Statement Necklace — makes anything special.

Gold or Silver Stud Earrings — these give a bit of light to your face yet don’t get in the way of other stand-out pieces.

Casual Basics:

Blue jeans Anthro
Reiko Phoebe Mid-Rise Bootcut Jeans from Anthropologie
  • Blue jeans
  • Jean jacket and/or chambray shirt – wear with anything (turtlenecks, tunics, form-fitting tops, peasant blouses, ruffles and frills.)
jean jkt Sundance
Posie Canyon Jacket from Sundance
  • White, gray and black t-shirts (black alternatives for those of you who have Soft Summer coloring would be charcoal, navy, pewter and cocoa.)
  • Striped t-shirt
  • Leggings, with tunics and for layering.
Leggings w shirt SS
Colorful Metro Leggings from Soft Surroundings

Not essential, but these go with so many things:

  • Faux Fur Vest
  • A Bomber Jacket and/or Utility Jacket
  • A No-collar Cardigan in a Thin Knit — belted or not, over a tank or bare, with just a scarf at the neck, with a skirt, pants or lightweight dress.
  • Pearls — you can even wear these with a beat-up tee, jeans and booties.

And one final style tip:

These are bottoms you can pair with anything:

  • Any Jeans, Slacks, Olive Pants, a Neutral (Solid or Printed) Skirt — choose a top you hardly ever wear and pair it with one of these basic bottoms.  Add layers, shoes and accessories as desired.
