Special Ways to Dress Up for Holiday Dinners
When you host and serve a dinner at your home and/or attend a dinner at your friend’s house, do you know what you will be wearing? If the answer is no, there are some ideas below that can help to inspire you.
These outfit ideas on what to wear to your holiday dinners is part of a series in my Holiday category here, where you can find outfit combinations for all the events that come up for you.
Whether you bought new clothes for the holidays or not, there are so many different types of events to enjoy. The new and the old will likely have to be mixed and matched. From laid-back and cozy to glitzy and glamorous, choose the style that matches your true self. Age doesn’t matter!
At-Home Dinner
In general, wear something comfortable and fun: long, easy dresses or a flowing shift or caftan. With a floor-length caftan, wear a slip or leggings underneath. Add only a dab of makeup, no jewelry, and comfy shoes or slippers.
Here are more ideas for entertaining at home that incorporate a little sparkle and shine:
- Wear your favorite black pants + a simple top with something sparkly, like jeweled slippers, a sequined scarf or a dazzling piece of jewelry.
- A pink skirt + any top + gold slip-on shoes.
- A red cashmere crew-neck sweater + gray flannel trousers. Add a gold belt + gold sandals + red & gold necklaces + gold cuffs. For an extra touch, tuck a flower in your hair or into your belt.
- A red cardigan unbuttoned and knotted at the waist over a long black jersey skirt. Wear nothing under the cardi or slide a thin black strapless camisole underneath. Add lots of gold jewelry and wear flat black ballet slippers.
At-Home or Dinner at Friends’
This is a continuation of the above category, except these outfits could also be worn if you’re not the one doing all the work!
- A navy sweater + navy velvet skirt. Add evening sandals + glittery bracelets + earrings — Or gold belt + gold sandals.
- A pale color shirt (like pink) unbuttoned low to show skin, over gray flannel trousers. Belt in gold faux leather or tie with a pale gray satin ribbon in a bow at waist. Add jewelry. If it’s your at-home dinner, wear gold slippers; if you’re going out, wear gold heels or gray satin trimmed in gold.
- A black crew-neck pullover + black floral skirt. Add evening sandals + glittery bracelets + earrings. Or you can do the gold belt & sandals instead.
- A black crew-neck pullover + a long, black, silky or jersey or velvet skirt. Add evening sandals + glittery bracelets and earrings — Or a gold belt + gold sandals.
- A gold metallic sweater + ivory cargo pants or ivory corduroy pants.
- A silk blouse + gray flannel trousers. Add gold belt + gold sandals + necklaces of gold & the color of the blouse + gold cuffs. Pull hair up and tuck a flower in.
- A chiffon tunic + skinny jeans toned to the color of the top. Add jewelry of choice.
