Age doesn't matter.

Do You Think of Style When You Write Your New Year’s Goals?

T’is the time to make goals for the new year coming!  Goals for the new year include many areas of our life.  The common areas we usually think of are health, money and work, relationships, community service and shedding bad habits.  Age doesn’t matter.  Life is a constant process of growth and self-improvement.

I never thought about creating style goals until I read Angie Cox’s blog You Look Fab.  Inspired by Angie, I made a list of style goals the last two years.  You might like to make some style goals of your own, if you don’t already.

These are some of my style goals, past and future:

In 2017, I made some progress in areas that I wanted to improve, like cleaning out and reorganizing my closet.  I bought velvet-covered hangers and hung my clothes by color groups within each category of tops, bottoms, cover-ups, etc.  I bought organizers for my underwear, socks and sweaters.  I am very happy with the improvement and the new system is permanent.

In 2018, I made a perfect list of what I wanted to accomplish but I didn’t manage to get very far at all.  One thing I did was to get some dressy ankle boots:  I ordered a pair of leopard-print kitten-heel boots and a pair of black high-heel sock boots.  Another thing I did was to buy a couple of pair of quality leggings to wear at the gym.

Then, of course, there were things I did that were not on the list.  For example, I got an online color analysis from Pamela Graham of Style Yourself Confident.  You can find out more about it in my blog post “Did You Know Colors Can Make You Look Amazing?

So 2019 gave me another shot at trying to check off the following goals left over from the year before.  I got a few done, but not all of them.  Once again, I’m planning to work this coming year on the ones I did not complete last year.  Obviously, this is an ongoing list.  Lol!

  1. Check out consignment stores in the area and start swapping.  I have been intending to write a blog post on thrift stores, but I don’t do much thrifting.  I have a lot of nice clothes that deserve a good price, so I’m looking forward to finding a place where I can sell them and then buy other things I need.  I am also aware that there are online alternatives, so if you know of something  better for me to do please let me know in the comments below!  And stay tuned for that blog post on thrifting…but it may not come until later in the year!
  2. Buy pieces to fill out exercise outfits with the pieces I’m missing, like hoodies, charcoal leggings and a good sports bra.  Done!
  3. Find a military-style maxi coat for winter in charcoal or navy.
  4. Add periwinkle blue to my wardrobe, and more greens.  More greens, done!
  5. Practice using colors in my outfits according to the Spring palette that Pamela recommended for me (see above) by:  1) creating the right amount of color contrast, and 2) neutralizing the cool colors in my wardrobe by mixing them with warm colors.  Done!
  6. Purchase more locally-made and green fashion.
  7. Repair clothes that have tears, rips, missing buttons, etc.  I already regularly take clothes that need serious mending and alterations to my very special tailor friend.  But I usually avoid sitting down to sew the easy stuff.  I did mend a few things this year, but there’s still a pile there.  Once again, I did mend a few things…so partially done!

Do you think about how you would like to update your style every year?  Perhaps you’d like to try new colors or trends or make something yourself, like sewing clothes or making jewelry.  If this is new to you, you could just make one style resolution for the year and see where it takes you.

  • Like Amy, I have never thought about creating a style list per say – what a great idea! I do love to thrift, so I can offer you a few ideas in that area.
For easy online consignment, I use ThredUp. Now the payout may not be as much as PoshMark, but you don’t do any work. You simply order the free clean out bag, load it up and send it back. They then do all the work for you. PoshMark you have to consign it yourself – it’s an easier version of eBay. This year I want to try out The Real Real so stay tuned. I have purchased from Real Real and love my finds, but have yet to consign with them. I also consign locally when I can to support local businesses in town. The turn is slower sometimes – but it’s also based on how “good” the stuff is that you bring in. Last, I co-host an annual clothing swap with my friends which is work, but so much fun! We will be doing our 4th swap this spring and I can’t wait! If you want to see how we do it, I wrote a re-cap on the blog, https://asksuzannebell.com/how-to-host-your-own-clothing-swap-second-hand-style/.
I just subscribed to your blog, I love it!

    • Thanks for the great tips, Suzanne! I’ve read your blog, and will go back to it for the clothing swap ideas. My plan was to check out consignment stores in my area and report on the experience. My family has been urging me, though, to just use a local program that picks up your bag of stuff from your porch and then delivers whatever you choose from online.

  • Wow! I never thought about fashion with my New Year’s Resolutions, but I love the idea! I think I may start with a closet cleaning!
