Do Your Shoes Smell Fresh and Sweet?

I was walking in the woods with my friend one day and she began to talk about her feet.  (Maybe they were starting to get tired from the hike?)  She went on to say how she was working hard to protect against fungal infections.  She wanted to find something that worked, and said I should do a blog post on it sometime.

So I told her about the time I went to a podiatrist and he was raving about a new invention!

He told me the whole story about how a man, named Allan Ullman, had received three treatments to get rid of toenail fungus but each time it came back.  His doctor helped him to realize that his shoes were reinfecting his feet.  Ullman had 30 years of commercial lighting experience, and already had five U.S. patents for various inventions.  He knew ultraviolet light would kill all of the odor-causing bacteria and foot fungus in shoes, but how to get it inside shoes without damaging our eyes?  He invented the world’s first ultraviolet shoe sanitizer, SteriShoe.

The podiatrist who told me about this was very excited about it, and recommended SteriShoe for the whole family.  Once someone’s shoes are sanitized and fresh-smelling, so is the sanitizer.  So then the next member of the family can use it in their shoes and everyone can share the same device.

SteriShoe also has a new, improved device now that fits a certain size shoe and has features that the original didn’t have.  Of course, this new version can only be used for one person’s shoes instead of the whole family’s since it fits to size.

Although SteriShoe claims on their website that they have a 4-star average customer review on Amazon, they actually have an average of 3 1/2 stars on their Essential SteriShoe and an average of 3 stars on their SteriShoe+ improved version.  However, they are the only shoe sanitizer awarded the seal of acceptance by the American Podiatric Medical Association.

I searched for a less expensive alternative, and ended up buying UV Total Recovery shoe sanitizer on Amazon.  The device goes inside the shoe, and then the shoe goes inside a protective bag to shield our eyes from the UV light, since it can be damaging to eyesight.

It is no longer available but I really like it.  Once our shoes are sanitized, the inside of the shoes actually smell fresh and new!  And it feels great to have clean shoes inside and out.
