Age doesn't matter.

How to Use the Color of the Year With Other Colors for the Most Outfits

Now that the Pantone Color Institute named their Color of the Year to be Very Peri, I discovered a lot that I hadn’t known before. For one thing, I thought I had only one periwinkle top but discovered it is a light blue. And for another thing, I discovered that I actually have five tops and six scarves that are actually periwinkle but I had thought of them as shades of lavender. When I discovered that, I got interested in combining those pieces into a variety of outfit combinations based on what colors go well with them. Suddenly this blog post was born because I wanted to share with you what I learned. You will find out how to use the color of the year by mixing and matching with other colors in your closet to get the most outfit combinations you can from what you have.

Periwinkle is featured in the True Spring color palette. But actually it is a universal color that looks good on anyone, depending on the shade. And when you use color to your advantage, age doesn’t matter. That’s because wearing your most flattering colors next to your face makes your skin look clearer and your eyes stand out. And you’ll get a beautiful effect with your natural hair color, too. You don’t have to stick with the exact shade of Very Peri. The stores aren’t; they’re offering a wide variety of purples and lavenders. So choose from cool or warm, light or dark, bright or soft shades of purple to find what’s best for you.

What Is Very Peri and Why Is It the Color of the Year for 2022?

Cotton Swatch Card – Pantone Color of the Year 2022

The Pantone Color Institute describes Very Peri in this way:

“a new Pantone color whose courageous presence encourages personal inventiveness and creativity…opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives. Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light.

“We are living in transformative times. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways. Digital design helps us to stretch the limits of reality, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new color possibilities…”

According to Wikipedia:

“Periwinkle is a color in the blue and violet family. Its name is derived from the lesser periwinkle or myrtle herb (Vinca minor) which bears flowers of the same colour. The color periwinkle is also called lavender blue. The colour periwinkle may be considered a pale tint of purple or a ‘pastel purple’.”

Periwinkle blends blue with violet in a range of shades from warm to cool. Therefore, you will see different blue and violet colors presented as Very Peri. This allows you to pick your favorite shades that look best on you.

How to Use the Color of the Year With Other Colors

Since periwinkle is a shade of violet or blue violet, its complement is shades of yellow such as lemon, sunflower, mustard and gold. You can wear these yellows with periwinkle without fear of them clashing. A light camel color is close enough to yellow that it would be a good neutral to use.

Other colors that you can combine with periwinkle are:

  • other shades of purple
  • blues, including:  aqua and navy
  • shades of green
  • shades of gray, with the possible addition of white

  • beige
  • orange
  • mixes well with amethyst jewelry or clothing

What a difference it makes to add a beautiful color like periwinkle to a denim-on-denim basic outfit. Besides a pullover, you could also use a cardigan or jacket.

    • Hopefully you’ll find some more clothes this year in this beautiful color! It goes great with black, white, gray, black and white, and gray and white. So you ought to get lots of outfit combinations out of what you have, and lots of use from your periwinkle polish!

  • I absolutely LOVE purple, and it has been my favorite color my whole life. Very Peri is a great shade to wear, and it also makes for very striking eye liners, eyeshadows and nail polishes!

    • Thanks for adding your beauty suggestions here! I hope you will try some new color combinations with your purple clothes from the list in this post. My purpose is to help you to create some new outfits you may not have thought of before.

  • I’m a fan of purple colors in general when it comes to makeup but I dont think i have any purple clothes! I’m not opposed to it, but I think when i choose color I’m always drawn to blues!

    • Very Peri is actually a periwinkle blue and is being seen as versions of light blue on Pinterest. So you can probably use certain shades of blue in place of it this year. And you can pair it with the colors I listed in this post. For instance, shades of orange complement blue. Yellow-orange is a split complementary color to blue. Greens, blue-greens and blue-violet are analogous colors to blue. Black, white and pink are in my list and also go with blue. If you haven’t tried mixing your blues with any of these colors, you might like to try them out so you can get some fresh new outfits out of your wardrobe. I hope this was helpful!

  • Periwinkle is a beautiful color, but I don’t have a lot of it, though I have a couple of bottles of periwinkle nail polish. I love your suggestions for how to wear it with other colors especially navy and grey.

    • I didn’t write about makeup, but the periwinkle nail polish is strikingly beautiful! I’ll bet a periwinkle eye makeup palette would be something you would like. And using my list of color combos, you could wear one of the colors from the list when sporting periwinkle nail polish and/or eye makeup. Just an eye-dea 😉
