It’s Still Winter: So How to Wear White When It’s Cold Outside?

As I write this, we are nearing the end of winter in my part of the world. I, myself, am continuing to enjoy the winter with hygge living. (For more on that, see my post “It’s Always a Good Time to Explore Hygge Style” HERE.) But most of us are looking forward to spring. It’s still cold and warm clothes are necessary, but wearing white can feel fresh and remind us of spring and summer. Fashion no longer dictates that white is restricted to those seasons; white is now worn year round. So the question is:  how to wear white when it’s cold outside?

We can use color to signal the coming of spring. Why don’t you try creating outfits with white and then as the first flowers bloom, add pops of spring colors to what you wear every day? You can get inspiration for that from my post “Want to Know How to Use Spring Colors Now?” HERE. When dressing by color, one size fits all; so age doesn’t matter.

Besides, mother nature looks beautiful in sparkling white snow. Why not take a cue from her and sparkle yourself, perhaps in white faux furs and crystal white jewels for instance? Let’s take a look at the different ways to get cozy in shades of white.

How to Wear White When It’s Cold Outside

Solids, prints, embroidered and embellished whites are all possible components of a winter white outfit.

No shade of white is off limits for fall and winter. Feel free to wear pure white to off-white to ivory to cream and beyond to stone and taupe. Looking at this range, I notice an obvious progression towards tan and then shades of brown. So it’s no wonder whites look so good with browns during cooler weather.

Following are various ways to make white wearable when it’s cold outside.

Just Change Up Your Footwear

Textured Duster Cardigan in ivory from Anthropologie can be worn when it’s cold outside with boots and when it’s warm outside with sandals.

During the transition to fall, you can wear sandals with warm clothes in shades of white. For instance, you could put together an ivory sweater with ivory velvet leggings or velour pants and sandals.

When the weather is cold, you can wear the same outfit as above (white sweater and/or white velvet, velveteen or velour bottoms) but wear tan, stone or gray boots with it.

Wear White Clothes in Cold-Weather Fabrics

Jealousy Leather Moto Jacket from Free People is wearable over 60. Age doesn’t matter.

It’s the textures in your outfit that take white through fall and wintertime. For instance, I have a white faux fur vest. There are boots and moto jackets in white leather. And there are suede pieces in shades of white.

When you buy corduroy pants in ivory or off-white, you certainly won’t think of them as warm-weather pants…although you might not want to put them away in the springtime. I have had a pair of velvet leggings forever that I wear all year round, except for the hottest days of summer. Warm knits in shades of white are another handy item during the cold seasons.

Combine White With Fall & Winter’s Neutrals

White jeans and pants and skirts can transition to fall and winter by combining them with fall and winter colors. You might like to see the latest color trends at the Pantone Color Institute in order to get some ideas. Neutrals make it especially easy to create cool-weather outfits with white.

  1. Wear tonal and textural shades of gray (top, topper, scarf, etc.) with white jeans.
  2. Shades of white + camel, tan or black.
  3. White or ivory + warm neutrals like caramel or cognac.
  4. Shades of white + dark, tonal or brown neutrals.
  5. Wear white with autumnal hues such as purple, cinnamon or pumpkin.
  6. Animal prints are neutrals, usually in the brown-toned family, that can be layered with white pieces.

Add a Cool-Weather Topper to a White Outfit

  1. A long-sleeve white t-shirt or sweater + white jeans + a jean jacket. Add a necklace.
  2. A white long-sleeve t-shirt + white pants + a white cardigan.

  3. Try wearing plaid with your white pieces. Toss a plaid blazer over a column of white (white top & bottom.) A plaid shirt can be worn open as a jacket or buttoned up as a top.
