How to Wear an Old Favorite: the Denim Maxi Trend

The denim maxi trend has been recurring over the past few years, so it is surely becoming a classic. There are ways to wear it in both cold weather and warm. So I’ve gathered all the style and outfit information you need to enjoy this jean skirt all year long!

The Denim Maxi Trend:  A Favorite For Its Versatility

A denim maxi skirt is a classic old favorite and useful year-round.  It can be dressed down or up, with a t-shirt and sneakers on a casual day or with a ruffled top and heels for an easy evening. In the cold months, wear it with tights and boots or wear it with bare legs and sandals in the warm months.

The long jean skirt can be sophisticated enough for work on casual Fridays with a button-down shirt. It can be feminine with a floral, ruffled, or sheer blouse. It can get some attitude with a leather jacket. Or, it can be sexy with a bare or off-the-shoulder top and heels.

Since there are so many ways you can wear this piece, age doesn’t matter!  All you need to do is make sure you wear it in a modern way.  Wear dark denim for a more grown up and sophisticated look.

Just think of the denim maxi skirt as the perfect piece to substitute for your jeans on certain days.  If you love your jeans like I do, you will want to have a jean skirt, too.  If you don’t care for jeans, you just might like the ladylike alternative of a jean skirt.

A long jean skirt needs a fitted top, or tuck the top in and belt it if there are belt loops.  Another way to add structure to this look is to leave your top out and sling a belt over it.

Outfit Ideas for Wearing the Denim Maxi Trend

Now here are some ideas to inspire outfit combinations for your denim maxi skirt. We’re starting with the easiest:  a t-shirt, natch! Then, there are outfit ideas for a white shirt or blouse, for a sweater, for a jacket, for a vest, for evening and more!

Wear It With a T-Shirt

1. Knot a loose t-shirt over a denim maxi skirt. Add tan gladiator sandals + sunglasses if sunny.
2. A t-shirt + a denim maxi skirt. Add high-top sneakers and socks.
3. A long-sleeve white t-shirt over a long jean skirt.  Sling a tan belt over hips.  Add tan heeled boots + statement coin earrings + a leather or metal beaded cuff (amber beads would work here.)
4. Tuck a long-sleeve brown tee inside a long jean skirt.  Belt in brown.  Add brown boots and bracelet.

   

5. A striped t-shirt + a denim maxi skirt + flat brown sandals.
6. A long-sleeve white tee + a long jean skirt.  Add a couple of strands of brown beads + a wood cuff.
7. Tuck a long-sleeve white lacy t-shirt inside a long jean skirt.  Add brown boots + gold bangles.
8. A beige or tan t-shirt + a denim maxi skirt. Add two tan belts + clogs.

With a White Shirt or Blouse

1. A romantic white blouse + a denim maxi skirt + brown boots or shoes.
2. Tuck a white shirt inside a denim maxi skirt. Add pearls + tall brown boots with a heel.
3. A white shirt + a long jean skirt.  Add turquoise and coral accessories + tan boots.
4. A white shirt or blouse tucked inside a long jean skirt.  Add a brown belt + brown leather wristband + tan or brown boots.  Push back sleeves to show wristband.
5. Tuck a white shirt inside a denim maxi skirt. Add a brown belt with a metal buckle + tall brown boots.
6. A white shirt tucked inside a long jean skirt.  Add black boots + silver bangles.

With a Sweater

1. Wear a cowl-neck sweater over a long jean skirt.  Add boots.  You might like to add a pin or brooch.
2. A fitted sweater in a neutral color over a long jean skirt.  Sling a big belt over the sweater.  Add brown boots with a heel.
3. A cardigan sweater, with or without a hood + a denim maxi skirt. Add hoop earrings.
4. Tone a sweater to a denim maxi skirt (sweater of a similar color.) Add earrings + tall boots + over-the-knee socks that come above the boots.

With a Jacket

1. A shrunken jacket + a snug knit or thin tank tucked inside a long jean skirt.
2. A jean jacket + a fitted top + a long jean skirt.
3. A suede jacket + a t-shirt + a long jean skirt.  Add a striped woolen scarf + boots.
4. A black turtleneck + a long jean skirt.  Add a black belt and boots…or sandals with a thin/sleeveless/short-sleeve t-neck.

With a Vest

1. Wear a faux fur vest over a top of your choice and a denim maxi skirt.
2. Denim vest + a long-sleeve white blouse + a denim maxi skirt.
3. A suede vest over a long-sleeve t-shirt tucked inside a long jean skirt.  Add a belt and boots.
4. A fringed vest + a shirt + a denim maxi skirt. Fold back the sleeves. Add earrings + necklaces + bangles + boots. You might like to turn up the collar in back and put your hair up.

For Evening

1. Top a silky camisole and denim maxi skirt with a black blazer or tuxedo blazer. Add evening sandals.
2. A lace top + jeweled belt + a denim maxi skirt.
3. A lace top + a denim maxi skirt. You might like to add a lace scarf + a brown or black faux leather jacket + boots.
4. Pair a denim maxi skirt with a feminine top, such as sheer or ruffled, and heels.
5. A denim maxi skirt + a bare or off-the-shoulder top + heels.

More Ways to Wear the Denim Maxi Trend

1. An animal-print top + a denim maxi skirt. (Find more outfit ideas for animal-print tops HERE.)
2. A striped top or tee over a long jean skirt. Sling a belt over the top. Add heeled sandals.
3. A Henley top + denim maxi skirt. Add a brown belt (studs would be nice here) + a gold necklace with a long pendant.
4. Tuck a wrap top inside a denim maxi skirt. Add a cross pendant on a short brown cord + tan sandals + a straw bag.
5. With a wrap top + a long jean skirt.  Add multiple strands of turquoise beads + studded shoes or shoe boots.

   

6. Tuck a turtleneck into a denim maxi skirt. Belt it. Then add boots and maybe a scarf.
7. A chambray shirt over a long jean skirt.  Add a brown belt over the shirt + brown or tan booties.
8. A long-sleeve t-shirt or sweater tucked into a long jean skirt.  Add heeled booties.  You might like to add a beret. A turtleneck tucked inside a long jean skirt.  Add boots or high-top sneakers.
9. A brown vest + a long-sleeve white sweater + a long jean skirt.  Add brown/gold/amber/ivory jewelry (i.e., substantial gold hoops and necklace with brown and ivory bangles)…Or, add a brown cap + gold ethnic earrings or carnelian earrings.
