What Is a Duster?

Kimono in golden olive by Himmelskater at Etsy over basic black

Over time, my concept of a duster was formed through context — or rather from seeing so many that I ended up with a vision in my mind’s eye of what a duster generally was. I assumed it was simply a longer version of a kimono or lightweight cardigan. Although one might think that a duster is so long that it “dusts” the floor as you walk, not all of them are. Some are just midi length.

Just to be a trustworthy source for you, I decided to look up the definition of what a duster actually is.  As is often the case with fashion, an article of clothing may originate as something useful and then evolve over time into new creations based on the beauty of it. So a duster was originally:  “a long, light over-garment, worn especially in the early days of open automobiles to protect the clothing from dust” and then became “a lightweight housecoat.” — Dictionary.com

Nowadays, it can still be worn over your basic clothes around the house. For instance, if you have on a t-shirt and jeans, a bralette and boxers, a crop top and leggings, pajamas, a nightgown or sweats, you can cover up and spiff yourself up with a pretty duster. It can also keep the chill off, especially if it’s a lightweight knit. Or you can throw it on over whatever you’re wearing around the house when you want to look presentable to get the mail or run an errand. It can be used as a swimsuit coverup. It can be a pretty substitute for a robe. And you can add a belt or tie on a sash.

There are duster coats, duster jackets, duster cardigans, duster vests and duster kimonos. That last type is what I’m focusing on in this post, but you may like to substitute whatever you have.

Ways to Style a Duster at Different Times

Floral Boho Duster Kimono from Grace & Lace over jeans and a tee or tank

A duster can be a third piece (over a basic or neutral top and bottom) to create a beautiful style for various occasions, especially when embellished with accessories. It’s great over jeans and a tee. Or, you can just belt it and wear it as a robe/housecoat. But beyond that, there are so many ways to style a duster.

I usually separate my outfit ideas by season. So I’ve divided the following outfit combinations into the categories of Warm Weather, Cold Weather, Anytime and Evening.

Below are specific outfit ideas that you can use by substituting what you have and changing the color palettes to your favorites. I hope you enjoy experimenting and creating new outfits with a duster. I would love to hear how it works out for you. Please do leave a reply below this post!

  • Fantastic post! I just picked up 2 fun dusters and this not only validates my purchase (i swore off kimonos after the pandemic 😂) but dusters are much more wearable than a kimono. Think cardigans with a twist. Pinned and forwarded your post to my readers as well. Thank you 🙏

    • Thank you so much, Suzanne! I can see that duster cardigans are perfect on you. I’m glad to give you the perfect replacement for your kimono looks. 😉

  • Great post! I love dusters of all sorts and the history of them is super fascinating. I am so glad that you shared that! I generally end up using the term kimono as the overall category, but duster is much more accurate. I need to revise my wording! Thanks for sharing this fun post and linking up with me.

    • Thanks for checking it out! Sometimes they are called kimono dusters. The word duster indicates that it’s long so whether it’s a kimono or cardigan or something else, I think of it as a longer length.

      • Dusters are so beautiful because they are dramatic-looking, not to mention they can be very exotic as well. What an interesting comment, Suzanne, because I usually save my dusters for going out someplace, thinking that they are so long that they get in my way around the house. They can be good as robes, though.
