No-nonsense clothes are what it’s all about on casual days when we are out running about town doing errands, taking care of family, shopping or all sorts of other things we need to do. On these days, comfort is the first priority in choosing what to wear. Age doesn’t matter. We’ll be out in the weather, whether cold or hot, and we’ll be on our feet a lot. So shoes that are made for walking, an athleisure look and comfortable tops and bottoms made to move are the order of the day.
With all that in mind, I have some outfit ideas that might help you add a little variety to your usual casual style. These outfit ideas can be handy, too, when you’re running out the door on a busy day and feel like you don’t have a thing to wear. You don’t even have to think, you can just refer to this list. 🙂
For casual evenings during the warm months from Spring through Summer, it’s easy to throw on something simple and go have fun. But it feels good to add a little embellishment. And it feels great to add something special to something simple and basic. Age doesn’t matter. Dare to look your best every day of your life!
When we are young, we may dress creatively to experiment with who we are. When we are older, we may dress creatively to freely express who we now know we are. Age doesn’t matter. The main thing is to have fun and feel good.
This week I was in New York for a mini vacation to see my son in the opening of the play “Raising Jo” off Broadway. One morning while waiting at the bus stop I noticed a woman’s uniquely stylish shoes. At first, I thought they looked like a takeoff on the sock shoe and sock boot trend. But as I looked more closely, I realized she had black footies on with her platform sandals. I introduced myself and found out her name is Doreen Chan and she is from Singapore.
Footies are often called sock liners or no-show socks or peds. They are made to wear inside closed-toe shoes to provide comfort and yet show bare ankles, as if you didn’t have any socks on at all. So this was a surprise, to realize that she was wearing sock liners to show. They blend with the design of the sandal perfectly!
Socks and sandals have been trending in recent years. At first it was just regular ankle socks with shoes or sandals. Then came sheer socks, which are often worn with high heels or sneakers. I mentioned them in my article “How to Wear Sheer Clothing with Confidence.” They can be embroidered mesh, fishnet, lace, etc.
You can get footies in fishnet, lace and different textures as well. The problem is that most footies show even though they are not supposed to. So one way to live with that is to make the edges lacy so it looks good when they show. Hue Women’s Hidden Cotton Liner work well if you don’t want them to show at all.
Doreen didn’t just get creative with her footwear. Her entire outfit contained multiple elements of styling. Her bomber jacket is satin with cranes embroidered on the back. She is carrying a backpack in a wild print combined with pants in another wild print. They are tied together by the black ground and the similar type and scale of prints. You can find out more about print mixing in my article “How to Be Bold and Creative with Print Mixing.”
I would go so far as to say that Doreen used quantum creativity when she got dressed! She’s definitely an inspiration.

Wearing pink is a color that can do wonders for your complexion if it’s in the right shade for you. Whether your style is dainty or classic, tough or menswear based, age doesn’t matter. What matters is how you combine this color with other colors and styles to get the effect you’re after. Continue Reading
The lady in today’s feature photo indeed has elegant style. She is Joyce Carpati, one of the subjects of Ari Cohen’s “Advanced Style” blog, movie and books. She is proud to reveal that she is in her 80’s and going strong. Here, she shows how to carry a backpack in a sophisticated way. Age doesn’t matter.I decided to cover this subject after a professional lady of a certain age criticized the style of backpacks as only fit for very young women. I thought to myself, “I like backpacks and would carry one myself from time to time. Why not?” Continue Reading
