What Hacks Help A Windy Situation?

March is known as the windy month, but windy weather can strike any time of year. Whether hot or cold or in between, certain hacks help a windy situation. Age doesn’t matter.

A lightweight yet cozy jacket is what you need to shield yourself from the wind and stay warm. Throw on a denim or faux leather jacket to protect you from the cold wind. On warmer days, use a denim or faux leather vest.

Woolly socks up the coziness, while a knit headband gets your hair out of your face. Bring hair ties with you to prevent the wind from whip-lashing you as you go about town.

Needless to say, pants are easier to wear in wind than skirts or dresses. Leggings or tights are another answer to your windy weather woes. If you’re wearing trousers or jeans out, slip a pair of tights on underneath, and no one will be any the wiser.

If you’re going with a skirt, tights are a great way to protect your legs during the cold. Leggings are even better because they look more like pants if your skirt happens to blow upward!

Maxi dresses worn with your simple v-neck sweaters scream spring. They also protect your legs from the wind under some soft, flowing fabric. If it’s cold out, add a pair of leggings under the dress.

How to Survive a Wind Tunnel in a Major City

I used to work in the New Center of Detroit. Just walking between skyscrapers for ten minutes was horribly cold because the wind whipped in between. Wikihow explains how to “Survive a Wind Tunnel in a Major City“:

  • Dress for the wind chill rather than the actual temperature.
  • In any temperatures, wear sunglasses or protective eye wear. No matter what the weather is like, dust, sand, snow, etc. can easily be blown around by the wind. Protective eye wear will save your eyes from debris.
  • Layers are the key to success. Wearing layers will ensure comfort no matter which way the wind blows. Try thermals for those unbearably cold, windy days!

  • If you are not willing to wear boots, at least wear long socks or leg warmers! Believe it or not, wind has the ability to sneak in and up through the bottom of your pants.
  • Hats, gloves, and scarves will be necessary. Make sure that your hats are snug. Something you may not think of is covering your nose and mouth with a scarf. You won’t be sorry.
  • When it is warm, remove your hats. If you have to struggle to walk against the wind, you might as well let it cool you off.
  • Be sure to wear long pants in extremely windy conditions. You may think it is okay to wear shorts, cut-offs, skirts, or dresses when it is warm out, but there IS such a thing as windburn.

Early in March, a puffer coat and tall boots over skinnies are what kept Tatiana of My Fabulous Forties blog warm during a trip to New York. Here is her “Outfit for the Windy Weather” above.

The above outfits are from “Pink Navy White Work Look for a Windy Spring Day” on the blog High Latitude Style. Nicole is wearing a dress over pants in the left photo to add an insulating layer over her white leather pants. Layers are key to protect from wind chill. Nicole is from Alaska, so she knows a thing or two about keeping warm!

You can also try a camisole or tank top under a sweater with a jacket over it.

trumpet skirt

A trumpet skirt keeps from blowing in the wind. Add an oversize sweater and heeled booties as shown here from “The Best Skirts to Wear on a Windy Day” at Refinery 29. Also note the topknot, which keeps your hair under control.

Or tie your hair down your favorite way. Add braids (real or a hairpiece), a hair tie, or even a scrunchie which is trending now.

Hair clips are fine, but securing your hair with longer bobby pins is the better choice. Decorative bobby pins are trending. Whether you want to get a loose bun or you’re going for a more complex up-do, long hair pins are the way to go. While shorter ones should be placed in an X to secure your tresses, longer pins are more versatile and can be the perfect way to protect your hair.
