How to Avoid Frustration From Makeup Smudging Under Eyes
I used to get so frustrated by eyeliner smudging under my eyes, almost as soon as I put it on! So I began to experiment with solutions to this problem. As long as you use eyeliner under the eyes, the following tips will help you. Age doesn’t matter.
Here’s what I found:
Apply a base or primer after your eye cream. I have used face primers by Almay and Physician’s Formula because I have sensitive skin. My favorite primer is Velvet Skin Coat by DHC because it’s like putting on an invisible velvet skin cloak.
- Try blotting under your eyes after applying your eye cream.
- A friend, who is a brilliant color artist with makeup, recommended concealer under the eyes. Her name is Michelle Collins, and I will be interviewing her in the future.
- Michelle also recommended powder, but instead of face powder right under the eyes where I need moisture, I put powder eye shadow instead. It’s best to put the powder on first, then apply the liner, in order to make it last.
- Use waterproof eyeliner. Since I have sensitive skin, I only use natural and hypoallergenic cosmetics. A Huffington Post article by Shira Hirschman Weiss has good reviews for Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Liner and Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil. I’ve tried the UD Eye Pencil which stays on unless you go swimming (like I do.)
- Try layering a liquid liner on top of your pencil eyeliner to seal in the color.
- Then try setting your eye makeup with a setting spray or tonic. I used to use natural rose water or grapefruit water spray. But since I tried using Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, I have found it even helps my makeup to stay on while swimming. Another possibility is to use a cosmetic grade sealant to not only keep your liner in place, but to make it resistant to water as well.
- Despite all this effort, if there is still some smudging during the day, make sure you have eye makeup remover sticks available. It’s often recommended to carry cotton swabs and a small bottle of liquid makeup remover, but I prefer the Almay oil free makeup eraser sticks. They’re in a handy little travel box, small and light.
