Age doesn't matter.

What is Your True Self? It is Your Free Spirit

to thine own self be true

“This above all: to thine own self be true,

And it must follow,

as the night the day,

Thou canst not then be false to any man.”

— Polonius to his son as they parted, in William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.”

Recently, I was thrilled to get the news that Your True Self Blog was issued a registered trademark.  To celebrate, I hosted my first giveaway.  As my blog does not generate money, I chose to offer an inspirational gift. It was a bronze necklace featuring an art print with William Shakespeare’s famous phrase “to thine own self be true.”

That advice, from Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet,” is a thought to keep in mind all through life.  Age doesn’t matter.

The winner, Kathy, sent me a message after she received the gift.  Here is her poetically thoughtful note:

When I think about the lovely pendant I received that was beautifully inscribed, “To Thine Own Self Be True”, it causes me to reflect…. What do I Want others to see about me? This pendant, a piece of those Visible layers, is in fact a statement about me. Perhaps that pendant with the layers even captures a snapshot in time. Is it muted or stated? Introspective or open? Cautious or carefree? Deliriously happy or devastatingly anguished?
Ahh, these layers of our inner selves may be revealed, as we choose! We are in control. And That, after all, Is Our Truth.

Kathy is, in turn, is causing me to reflect…So when you choose your outfit every day, what do you want others to see about you?  I always encourage you to show your true self, the timeless inner being that is your essence.  But, as Kathy says, you are in control.

There may be times that you want to show different aspects of yourself.  There is perhaps the powerful you, the sexy you, the intelligent you.  There are different occasions that call for different looks.  Remember that those looks are not generic.  They are the different faces of you, always you.

So when you buy clothes and put them on, make sure you add:

…something you love into the mix

…something that shows a little of you, or a lot

…something that shows how you are feeling or what you think.

I hope you are inspired by these thoughts.  How do you show your true self?  Let us know the ways in the comments below!
