How I Was Introduced to Using My Own Singing Bowl to Heal Body, Mind and Spirit

When things began to get crazy in the year of 2020, I started to follow Patrizia 1111 on You Tube. She is an intuitive tarot card reader. I find it reassuring to get an idea of what energies are active around us and in the coming weeks ahead. Patrizia begins by using a singing bowl to clear our energy and our space. She says that if there’s anything heavy that you are carrying within you, all you have to do is take a deep breath and exhale as the sound vibration calms you. It always makes me stop and pause as I listen to it.

I shared Patrizia’s channel with my daughter. Soon after, she bought me a beautiful Tibetan singing bowl. I was so surprised and delighted to have my own. I had no idea how to use it myself. But it’s so simple. The Bronze Mantra Singing Bowl from Silent Mind above is the one I have.

With a good singing bowl, all you do is tap it with its wooden striker. As it begins to vibrate, you can get it to sing by running the striker around the rim of the bowl. It’s similar to tracing your finger around the rim of a wine glass. When you hold it in your hand, you can feel its sound vibrating through you.

Healing the Body

Sound Therapy

The work of Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, MD, a medical oncologist, was central in adding a new dimension of healing to cancer treatment with sound therapy. He was initially inspired by a patient who was a Tibetan monk named Odsal.  In thanks for his treatment, Odsal introduced  the doctor to a singing bowl and showed him how to use it. This started Dr. Gaynor in the direction of sound therapy. He explained:

“If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.”

I was feeling exceedingly tired on the day I wrote this post. So I sat down to use my singing bowl for just a minute or two. I was very surprised that afterward I was not as tired! I didn’t expect a healing of any sort. Now I know that it can work as a reviver.

Healing the Mind

As I mentioned in my introduction, the sound of the singing bowl just stops me in my tracks. Drawing the sound from the bowl and getting it to sustain for as long as possible is fascinating and calming. When you concentrate on making the bowl sing and listen to it, the mind clears all other thoughts.

Prepare for Meditation

Playing a singing bowl is a good way to relax and focus, which is what makes it a good meditative tool. Just hit the bowl with the mallet and trace the edge of the bowl as many times as you need to in order to clear your mind in preparation for meditation.

Practice Mindfulness

When you find yourself multi-tasking or feeling overwhelmed by too much to do, a singing bowl can help you to practice mindfulness. It helps you to focus on one thing at a time. And it can be as easy as tapping your singing bowl before starting a project, or each time you go on to the next step.

Healing the Spirit

Relax and Reduce Stress

In “Singing Bowls for Meditation and Mindfulness,” Silent Mind Singing Bowls writes:

“Sounds hit us on a deep level, awakening our body and mind and soothing our soul. A well-made singing bowl will give a tone that sounds ethereal. It’s this sound that moves us in ways we might not even be able to fully explain – just like the notes of any song which resonates with you on a deep and magical level.”

A singing bowl helps you to alleviate anxiety, relieve stress, relax, become more mindful, calm and heal yourself in body, mind and spirit. Sounds pretty good for the times we’re in, doesn’t it?  🙂
