Over 20 Ways to Wear Peplum Tops Including Outfit Ideas
The peplum is a waist-defining figure maker, a feminine shape. This style is trending once again this year, this time in softer materials. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear what you already have. We’ll talk about how they are being styled now and through spring/summer and beyond. That includes over 20 ways to wear peplum tops along with outfit ideas. I hope you will be inspired.
I’m going to be looking to wear my black lace peplum when I go out for an evening or even to a daytime event where I can just wear jeans and a nice top.
What’s So Good About Peplum Tops
It’s great for a romantic springtime look or a sexy summer look. For fall and winter, there are sweater peplums. And peplum tops come in a wide variety of materials and styles, from casual to dressy for day or night.
Some peplums may just be narrower at the waist. Or perhaps the flare at the waist is a flounce of chiffon or lace. They also come in loose versions with the flounce simply as a style detail.
This style, by the way, not only creates a waist but it also camouflages the tummy. It’s a clothing shape that will not go away. Think of the female space-age clothing in science fiction movies and television shows. I can imagine outfits made of silver lame or faux leather (as in the movie, The Matrix) as a future trend.
Curvy girls might already be thinking, “but I am not going to look good in a peplum top!” But there are exceptions, as you can see in the plus-size shops. A really good example is the surplice peplum top, as seen above.
Ways to Wear Peplum Tops
The peplum top is versatile, in that it may be worn over either full or slim bottoms.
Pants to Pair With a Peplum + Outfit Ideas
In the outfit ideas below, use whatever color combinations you have and/or prefer.
When wearing blue jeans, choose light blue jeans for a casual outfit and dark blue jeans for dressy occasions.
- Get a flowing look with a peplum top and wide-leg trousers.
- Wear a black peplum with black faux leather pants & black high-top sneakers. If cool, top with a black boyfriend cardigan. Push up sleeves and add a bangle.
- A peplum top + a fitted/slim jacket + skinny pants.
- Simply wear a peplum top over jeans or a short denim skirt.
- A black peplum + skinny jeans + a colorful statement necklace.
- With a peplum top and blue jeans, add one or more gold bangles & maybe a gemstone necklace, such as turquoise. Or, accessorize with a couple of long delicate pendants. You might also like to wear cut-out booties.
- Try a black peplum top over soft red pants. Accent with gold (for instance, a bangle.)
- A peplum top + ponte pants. Add ankle boots & hoop earrings.
- Wear a peplum over gaucho pants (cropped wide-leg pants with a flowing drape) or other crops.
- For evening, wear a peplum with black faux leather pants & heels.
Skirts to Pair With a Peplum + Outfit Ideas
- Wear a peplum top over a silk or satin bias skirt.
- A peplum shape is perfect with a full skirt, such as a short chiffon or long tulle skirt. Add a modern touch with mismatched earrings (i.e., one statement earring with a different earring.)
- Reach for the classic combo of a peplum top & a short black skirt.
- Go for the feminine pairing of a peplum top with a pencil skirt, short or long. Black pumps are the usual footwear, but go ahead and get creative if you want.
A belt over a peplum top can be even nicer!
- Pair a peplum top with a floral skirt.
- A black peplum top + a black leather skirt (short, slim and/or straight.) Add a pendant on a black cord + a black bracelet, perhaps with charms + tall, black, heeled boots.
- Wear a peplum over a lacy skirt — short or long, casual or dressy.
Other Ways to Wear Peplum Tops
- Top a black peplum top & bottoms of your choice with a black faux leather jacket. Or use whatever colors you have.
- Pair a peplum top with animal-print leggings, pants or skirt.
- Layer a peplum top over a short dress, such as a slip dress or a body-conscious dress. Add a long, delicate pendant. You might like to wear booties & sunglasses if it’s a sunny day.
- You can even wear a peplum in a casual material over shorts in the summer!
