Style Tip: How to Revive Old Classics & Make Trends Work for You

From my Style Tips Series, today’s tip is about how to revive old classics and make trends work for you. Since classic pieces last through the years, there’s no need to discard them. And if you don’t like the thought of being a slave to trends, there is a way to use them so that they fit right into your outfits. Age doesn’t matter. So let me give you a hint that I hope will inspire you…

Style Tip:

Pair classic pieces with a strong, trendy piece. (Stow classic items for 3-4 years; then reintroduce them into your wardrobe.)

As long as your classic clothing still fits and is in good condition, there’s no need to discard them. If you get tired of them, putting them away for awhile will make them feel new again when you retrieve them. Sometimes I even forget that I had some of them and it’s a nice surprise to rediscover them!

First, Let’s Start by Looking for Your Classic Pieces

Some classic pieces are:

We can get ideas on how to do this by looking at this year’s fashions.

Coastal Cool

This one is an easy for Spring and Summer. For instance, the Coastal Cool trend already contains classic pieces such as Breton stripes, boat shoes, rope belts, espadrilles, wide-leg trousers, etc.

Ladies Who Lunch

Ladylike Bow Jacket from Boden with modern jeans

The Ladies Who Lunch trend is ladylike style largely based on tweed pieces, classic dresses, twin sets, etc.  Keep up-to-date by introducing some high-low contrast with jeans or unexpected footwear like sneakers and clogs.

Boho

Romantic Roses Printed Midi Skirt from Free People with a blazer

Bohemian style has been trending for the past year, but it is really a classic by now you can hang onto anything you have in this vein. This Spring, sheer fabrics, lots of beading, embroidery and handicraft detailing are bringing out the romance in the new designs. Layer your sheer pieces, whether tops, skirts or vintage gowns and then ground them with solid flat footwear. Pair with classic pieces such as blazers, white shirts, trousers, etc.

Elevated Athleisure

For the elevated athleisure trend, there are sweats and such designed now in luxe materials and dressed up versions. Sweatpants and joggers are paired with blazers. Layer your nicest classics with cropped leggings.

Straight-Cut Pants

Stovepipe Jeans from Madewell are a classic that reflects the slim-cut pant trend and are combined with sling-back heels, which are also classics that are trending this year.

Straight-cut pants are the latest relief us women are getting from tight, skinnies. They’re still skinny but in an eased-up way. The stovepipes above are one example and are styled here with the quintessential white tee and quality tote bag.

Preppy

From Bottega Veneta Spring 2025 Ready-to-Wear at Vogue

Preppy is being deconstructed in new ways, but combine asymmetrical pants with attached skirt as above with a chambray shirt and it tames the piece.

As I finished this post, I realized that this year’s fashions are quietly traditional. Besides the examples above, designers also focused on retro-inspired patterns, pastels, vintage florals, polka dots, soft plaids and checks, eased-up workwear and crochet. These trends seem tame, don’t they?

So there’s not a lot of wild creations out there to scare us away from trying something new. On the contrary, there’s lots to encourage us to experiment with the tried and true clothes we already own. I hope you’ll enjoy it!
