How to Wear a Sequin Top or Topper for Fall & Winter Evenings

As part of my Fall/Winter Evening Series, I’m adding this post on how to wear a sequin top or topper because they are look makers.  And I surely wouldn’t do without my sequin t-shirt! Actually, I consider a sequin tee an essential wardrobe item for day, night and year round. It’s that versatile and so much fun!

Besides the t-shirt, I also own a couple of sequin tank tops, a number of long-sleeve sequin tops and a sequin shirt. The long-sleeve tops are great for layering day or night, so they’re pretty useful. I reserve the shirt for evening wear, but it doubles as a jacket when left unbuttoned so I consider it worth having. It makes a sequin jacket or blazer unnecessary for my casual lifestyle. All these items do come in handy often enough for me to recommend them as part of an evening wardrobe.

Age doesn’t matter. Older is bolder, so go ahead and sparkle whenever you get the chance!

This post is divided into sequin tops and then sequin toppers. The tops are divided into the categories of shirts, black tops, layering tops, pairing with jeans, pairing with black pants or skirts and other ways to wear sequin tops. Each of those categories has outfit ideas. Below that are examples showing the different types of toppers.

SEQUIN TOPS

A sequin top doesn’t have to have sequins all over. They can be used as edgings, designs or sprinkled here and there. If I count all those in my wardrobe, I also have a sweater, a velvet tunic and a tunic blouse. Just plug them into the outfit combinations below for more variety in your evening outfits.

SEQUIN SHIRTS

My sequin shirt is from The Porter Collective just like the one above, only in gold. It’s beautiful and versatile!

You might like to add a coverup over your sequin shirt such as a jean jacket, blazer or cardigan for warmth. If so, always shoot the cuffs (show sequin cuffs.)

WAYS TO WEAR A SEQUIN SHIRT WITH A SKIRT OR DRESS

J.Crew: Collection classic fit sequin shirt with a t-shirt and skirt

1. Tie a sequin shirt over a tank or cami that is tucked inside an animal-print skirt. Add a gold cuff + animal-print booties.
2. Tie a sequin shirt over a tan camisole & an animal-print skirt. Add boots.
3. Loosely tuck a sequin shirt into a long, flowing skirt and belt it. Choose a casual skirt and belt or dressy, depending on the occasion.
4. Wear a sequin shirt partially buttoned in the middle over a long slim skirt. Add tall heeled boots. Layer on bangles.
5. Unbutton a sequin shirt low over a short skirt. Add tall black boots with a heel & gold accessories.
6. Wear a sequin shirt over a cute dress.

WAYS TO WEAR A SEQUIN SHIRT WITH PANTS

1. Pair a sequin shirt with faux leather pants or skirt.
2. Pair a sequin shirt with tailored pants.
3. Wear a sequin shirt open as a jacket over a matching top & bottom pant set. You might like to push up the sleeves.
4. Unbutton a sequin shirt low and half tuck into cargo pants. Add animal-print flats + a gold or silver pendant in neckline + one or two gold bracelets, bangles or cuffs + a statement gold ring.
5. A gold sequin shirt + ivory skinnies + gold statement earrings.
6. Wear a sequin shirt with velvet pants or skirt.

WAYS TO WEAR A SEQUIN SHIRT WITH JEANS

1. Instead of buttoning, tie a sequin shirt over a white tank or camisole that’s tucked inside blue jeans. Belt in tan or white. Add tan boots + a couple of extra rings + a charm necklace in the neckline. Or skip the necklace, roll back the sleeves and add a chunky chain bracelet.
2. Wear a sequin shirt open as a jacket over jeans and a tee. Add pretty flats + a statement necklace + a chunky gold chain bracelet with sleeves rolled up. Or simply wear boots with the jeans, tee and shirt.
3. A gold sequin shirt as a jacket over an ivory camisole & blue jeans.
4. Leave a sequin shirt open over a tank top that’s tucked into blue jeans or brown bootcuts. Add boots. Or, belt it and add flats or loafers.
5. Roll up the sleeves of a sequin shirt and wear over distressed jeans. Add a chunky gold chain bracelet + pretty shoes. 
   

   

6. Front tuck a sequin shirt into blue jeans. Roll back the sleeves. Add a belt + pendants in the neckline + a cuff bracelet.
7. Unbutton a sequin shirt low over a brown scoop-neck top & brown pinstriped jeans or pants. Or, match the color of your top to whatever color your pinstriped pants are.
8. Pair a gold sequin shirt with blue jeans. Add boots with a heel + gold dangle earrings & a y-necklace.
9. Wear an oversized sequin shirt over skinny jeans. Add chunky gold chain earrings & a gold purse.
10. Partially button a sequin shirt over ivory pants or jeans. Add sneakers.

WAYS TO WEAR A SEQUIN SHIRT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

1. Holidays:  Wear a sequin shirt open as a jacket over a column of color (same color top & bottom.) This is especially festive over a red top & red bottom. Add animal-print boots + a gold statement necklace + a chunky gold bracelet with sleeves rolled back.
2. Casual Holiday Events:  Wear a gold (or color of your choice) sequin shirt as a jacket over a gray tank top & casual gray pants, such as corduroys.
3. For Any Season:  Wear a sequin shirt as a jacket over an ivory top & ivory jeans. If sunny, add sunglasses. Or, only fasten one button of your sequin shirt over an ivory cami & ivory pants. Add a big bangle or cuff & sneakers.
4. Any Season:  Wear a sequin shirt open as a jacket over a long top in a matching color & flowing pants. Add booties & a fedora. Or for transitional weather, Spring or Summer, add sneakers & a straw hat.
5. Anytime:  Only fasten one button of the sequin shirt over a cami + blue jeans + a duster, duster cardigan or crochet duster. Add rugged boots & a statement ring.
6. Anytime:  Tie a sequin shirt over a dress. Add Western-style boots + a couple of cuff bracelets + a hat. If it’s sunny, add sunglasses.

MORE WAYS TO WEAR SEQUIN TOPS 

BLACK SEQUIN TOPS

1. Black sequin top + distressed blue jeans. Add a pop of color, such as red.
2. Coordinate a black sequin top with black bottoms & pretty black shoes.
3. Black moto jacket + a black sequin top + black skinny or straight-leg jeans.  Add a chain necklace + a chunky chain bracelet + black heels + black clutch.
4. Wear a black leather blazer over a black sequin tank top & jeans.  Add booties + a black and gold skinny scarf under the lapels of the jacket.
   

   

5. A black sequin top + black faux leather pants.  Add an amazing gold bracelet.
6. A moto jacket + a chiffon skirt + a black sequin tank.
7. Wear a black sequin tunic over black leggings. Add gold bracelets.
8. For casual holiday events:  A black top with sequins + black or blue jeans.

SEQUIN LAYERING TOPS

I bought the Gold Rush Long Sleeve top, above, from Free People in champagne and gold. They’re very form-fitting, so I like layering them under things.

1. Layer a sequin top over a long-sleeve lace top and wear with jeans for Fall and Winter evenings. When cold, add a jacket or cardigan over.
2. A sequin top tucked into blue jeans. You might like to belt it or layer a graphic tank over it (to convert tank to a long-sleeve top.) Add boots.
3. Tuck a sequin top into blue jeans and top with a faux leather jacket or a sherpa jacket. Shoot the cuffs (push back jacket sleeves to show the sequin cuffs.)
4. A short-sleeve metallic top over a long-sleeve sequin layering top & jeans. Add statement earrings.
5. Tuck a sequin t-shirt into cargo pants. Add matching boots. 
   

   

6. Slip a sequin layering top under an oversize t-shirt & blue jeans. Add a statement necklace.
7. Layer a V-neck sweater over a sequin top over trousers or chinos.
8. Shine brightly with a short-sleeve sequin top over a long-sleeve sequined top. Wear with faux leather, velvet or denim pants or skirts. Amp it up with sparkly statement earrings or tone it down with simple hoops.
9. Top a sequin top & printed chiffon skirt with a jean jacket. Add statement earrings + a big ring + heeled sandals. Leave hair down casually.
10. A sequin top under a sleeveless or matching-color short-sleeve dress.
11. Wear a sheer tank over a sequin layering top with bottoms of your choice.

SEQUIN T-SHIRTS

1. Top a sequin t-shirt & jeans with a velvet duster.
2. Wear a velvet suit with a sequin tee.
3. Wear a plaid shirt open as a jacket over a sequin tee & jeans. Add booties and maybe a vest.

WEAR A SEQUIN TOP WITH JEANS

A sequin top with jeans is an easy way to dress for casual evenings. It’s especially good for restaurants because it looks good up top, where you’ll be seen the most and anything goes on the bottom. It’s also great for a casual Saturday night out.

1. Partially tuck a blouse with sequin trim into jeans. Add an embellished belt + a long metal tassel necklace.
2. A tank top with sequins on it + jeans + a drape-front cardigan or a hoodie.
3. A velvet jacket + a sequin tank top + skinny jeans.  Add ankle boots.

WEAR A SEQUIN TOP WITH BLACK PANTS OR SKIRT

1. Wear a sequin sweater with faux leather pants or skirt. Add matching-color earrings.
2. A velvet blazer over a sequin tank top tucked inside black pants. Use a length of black silk or ribbon as a belt.
3. Tuck a blouse with sequins on it into a black pencil skirt. Add black tights for chilly evenings.
4. Tuck a sequin top inside a black tiered skirt. Add a statement necklace + a metal bracelet + an extra ring + black ankle boots + an embellished purse.

OTHER WAYS TO WEAR SEQUIN TOPS

1. Pair a sequin top with a vest. You could even try a navy fringed vest over a black sequin-trim tunic & skinnies.
2. A sequin tank over a lightweight turtleneck + blue jeans or pants. Add pumps.
3. Wear a tunic-length velvet shirt open as a jacket over a sequin tank top + skinnies. Add a booties + a statement necklace or layer necklaces that are the same color as the shirt.
4. A sequin top + a chiffon or tulle skirt. Add metallic heels + bling.

SEQUIN TOPPERS

Here is an example of the array of toppers you can find with sequins. Just add to your favorite outfits to dress them up!
