Elevate your wardrobe with dress extender. They are the versatile solution for adding length, layering and refreshing your favorite dresses. These extenders are perfect for achieving modesty or reinventing shorter pieces.

Lovely Life Extender Slip On Dress from Angel Heart Boutique can be worn under a short dress, tunic or kimono…or on its own.

Dress extenders are like slip dresses with romantic hems. Skirt extenders are like petticoats. Both are used as an underlayer with a lace or ruffled hem or perhaps made of tulle that are meant to peak out from the bottom of your dress or skirt.

The classic slip extender is often made of a nylon/cotton blend and comes in midi or full length. Popular colors are black, white and cream because they are the most versatile, but you can find other colors too. This extender is typically worn under too short or sheer dresses.

A lace hem extender often comes in midi or knee length, usually in off white or taupe for its romantic look. It adds femininity and is useful for formal occasions.

The ruffle hem extender is usually made in a soft material with an easy drape, like jersey or chiffon. It normally extends to above the knee or midi length. It is useful for playful layering and is more for casual use.

A plus-size extender comes in materials that stretch, come in a full range of hem details and are popular in all colors. It gives full cover and is useful in extending the size of a dress.

You could substitute a ruffled, lacy or tulle skirt for an extender.

How to Layer It

For Monochromatic Chic:

  • Choose an extender in the same color family as your dress for a streamlined silhouette—especially flattering for petites or anyone aiming for elongation.

Mix Textures and Patterns:

  • Combine a lace extender with a denim dress for contrast.
  • Pair a ruffle extender with florals for a feminine vibe, or with solids for understated elegance.

Play With Lengths

  • Try a midi-length extender with a mini dress, or a knee-length version under a mini skirt.
  • Experiment by letting a patterned or colored hem add your own artistic twist to your dress or skirt.

Outer Layers:

  • Style with cardigans (whether cozy & warm or sheer & lacy,) cropped jackets, dusters or kimonos.

How to Accessorize

Belts:

  • Belt your dress at the waist over an extender to create shape.

Jewelry:

  • Play off the romantic details of your extender. Lace hems look lovely with delicate necklaces or pearls; ruffles can be balanced with chunky bangles.

Footwear:

To find out how to use top extenders, see my post “How to Give New Life to Tops That Are Too Short.”

Turn a Dress Extender into a Skirt by Topping It With a Tunic

  1. Wear a crochet top over a matching-color dress extender. Add boots or sandals.
  2. A tunic-length tee over a matching-color dress extender. You might like to add leggings under for warmth, or tall boots. Try accessorizing with gold statement earrings, or — a long pendant or tassel necklace framed by a long chain or long string of beads + bracelets + maybe a statement ring.
  3. A sleeveless tunic in any color over a neutral dress extender, such as black.

Wear a Dress Extender as a Slip Dress

You could use a dress extender just like you would a slip dress. For ideas on how to wear it this way, see my posts “Does a Slip Dress Really Have to Be Sexy?” and “How to Layer a Slip Dress Like a Pro.”

  • A black dress extender + a moto jacket. Add tall brown heeled boots.

Marsha from Marsha in the Middle blog in a skirt over orange tulle skirt as skirt extender

Marsha from Marsha in the Middle often extends her hemlines with petticoats from Gudrun Sjoden. It was because of her that I began to see these long ruffled and lacy extenders as wearable, but I needed to find out exactly how to do it. That’s what inspired me to write this post!

  1. A long-sleeve t-shirt + a skirt over a skirt extender. Add a vest + a duster + a necklace, earrings, rings, lace-up boots.
  2. A dress that’s too short over a skirt extender.
  3. Wear a dress extender under a slip dress that’s too short
  4. Add a short skirt over a dress extender.
  5. A classic black blazer or a black velvet blazer over a black dress extender. You might like to add a black sequined top over the extender so that it looks like a skirt.

    • From working at home, I’ve turned into a big t-shirt and leggings girl most of the time, to tell you the truth. But I still fall in love with beautiful skirts. And extenders are as useful as they are beautiful. I’ve also become a caftan and maxi dress girl during the hot days of summer because they feel the coolest.

  • Oh gosh, they look fantastic! I had never heard of them and I certainly never saw them here in stores or online. What a perfect solution for shorter skirts or just to add more interest!

    • When I first found out about them, I fell in love. I’m trying to hold myself back from collecting too many. Lol!

  • I never quite got the hang of the slip extenders that were out a few years ago. I think it’s because they were shorter than what you see now. I actually just got my first couple of items from Miss Rose Sister Violet. I can’t wait to actually wear them and take photos! I’m so glad I got you interested in the slips. They are such a fun and easy addition to an outfit. Love all these ideas, too!

    • Thanks for sharing your photo! I haven’t found it easy to figure out how to fit the full skirt extenders under which skirt, but I am definitely going to set my mind to it. I’m encouraged by you saying it’s easy. 🙂
