Our celebration of the new year was a getaway to Traverse City, Michigan, just the two of us.  The weather in Detroit had been in the 50’s F. since before Christmas.  Then as we drove four hours north, we headed into snow squalls and a snowy, gray new year in the Grand Traverse Bay area.

We stayed at the Country Inn and Suites on the edge of Grand Traverse Bay, where the beaches are.  The Inn is simple yet tasteful with superb hospitality and attention to detail.  We enjoyed a complete breakfast buffet, a large clean swimming pool and hot tub with colored lights, a fireplace with a lending library and a staff that was helpful and friendly.

Traverse City, the “cherry capital of the world,” is known for its beaches including the Sleeping Bear Dunes, wineries, culture and quality cuisine.  Seafood abounds.  Boating is so big that it’s taught here and lighthouses dot the shoreline.  It’s a resort town throughout all four seasons with the beauty of the land and sea making sports of all sorts a pleasurable pursuit.

However, my husband Russ and I came for a romantic, relaxing getaway from the busy life we lead.  We lounged on the bed almost half the time, swam in the pool every day, steeped ourselves in the hot tub and ate sumptuous dinners in cozy area restaurants.

Nearly everywhere we went, we enjoyed a warm fireplace.  We could see snowflakes sparkling in the sky through the windows all day and night.  The Christmas lights made them even more beautiful.

On New Year’s Eve, we dined at the Apache Trout Grill where we had…trout!

I packed navy blue tops and bottoms in velvet, silk and denim for the trip with teal and turquoise accessories.  It was a dressy casual look and easy to mix and match.

Warm wishes for the happiest new year!
