How to Get More Outfits from Your Suits

Do you always wear your suit as an ensemble?  Do you remember to break it up in order to get more outfits out of it?  I’ve often heard it advised to hang all your jackets in one area together, all of your skirts together, all of your trousers together and all of your vests together with your tops so that you can see the possibilities.  If you’d like to get more ideas for how to get lots more outfits from your suits, you’re in the right place.  That’s what I do:  come up with outfit ideas galore!

Not only do I have lots of outfits here for you to choose from and inspire you, but I also have nine (9) style tips in this one blog post.  You can break up your suits to get outfits to wear every day for every purpose (work, weekends, evenings, etc.)  Age doesn’t matter.  So let’s get creative and have some fun!

I’ll start with a couple of tips, then I’ve got more tips sprinkled into the following categories:  outfit ideas for a navy linen blazer, a classic blazer, a tweed blazer, a pinstripe blazer, pinstripe pants, tweed pants, trousers, a skirt from a suit, a vest from a three-piece suit and other ways to break up a suit.

Tip #1:  Dress up a casual outfit with a blazer.

Tip #2:  Pair a great blazer or jacket with a pair of jeans.

Tip #3:  Take any blazer including suit jackets and tuxedo jackets, in any color including white.  Then throw it over a casual outfit to spiff it up and give it structure.

Navy Linen Blazer

Tip #4:  Wear a navy linen blazer with a wide variety of skirts and pants.

  1. Spring/Summer: A navy linen blazer + white pants + a white shell.
  2. A navy linen blazer + brown tweed pants + a black or white top.  Add brown belt + brown shoes + gold & wood jewelry.
  3. A navy linen blazer + a brown skirt + a cream-color top.
  4. A navy linen blazer + gray pants + a cream ruffled blouse.
  5. A navy linen blazer + black skirt or pants + black top.  Add gold jewelry.  If cool, throw a black shawl over your shoulder.
  6. A navy linen blazer + gray pants + a gray top.
  7. A navy linen blazer + a navy shell top over tan pants.  Add wide gold hoop earrings.

Classic Blazer

Tip #5:  Try wearing a black jersey skirt, long or short, and a black camisole with a navy jacket, brown jacket, tweed jacket, safari jacket, a linen jacket or a black velvet blazer.

Tip #6:  Add a braided belt over a blazer.  You might like to tuck in the end.

  1. Spring/Summer:  A white blazer + a pale-color shirt (i.e., ivory, silver, gold, pale pastels) + black pants.  Add a statement necklace + colored loafers + a watch + a black bag.
  2. Casual Fridays:  A navy blazer + ivory cargo pants.
  3. Evening:  A black sequin tank top + black skinnies + a black blazer.  Add ankle boots + a big gold necklace.
  4. A blazer + a tank top tucked into skinny sweatpants or joggers.  Add heels + statement jewelry.
  5. A structured blazer + wide-leg trousers + a fitted top.  Add a fedora.

  6. A blazer + a denim skirt or pants.
  7. A white blazer + black pants + black shell.  Add gold hoop earrings.
  8. A blazer over a sweater dress, t-shirt dress, lounge dress or other dress.  You might like to add a belt.
  9. A navy blazer + a blue oxford shirt + red pants.  Add white heels + bracelets.
  10. A navy blazer + brown trousers + a brown or black sweater.  Add brown jewelry.

  11. A navy blazer + an embellished t-shirt + blue jeans.  Add one or more strings of beads + a cross-body purse to match.
  12. A navy blazer + sweatpants.
  13. A navy blazer + a longer-length top + leggings.
  14. A beige blazer + pastel separates + colorful heels (i.e., pale yellow top, pink pants, green heels.)
  15. A beige blazer + a striped top + black pants.
  16. A beige blazer + a red tank top + brown pants.  Add a couple strands of brown beads.

  18. A black camisole tucked inside red pants + a black blazer.  Add a narrow black belt + black sandals.
  19. A black blazer + black v-neck t-shirt + blue jeans.  Add gold hoops.
  20. A black blazer + a ribbed top + blue jeans.  Tie a scarf around neck.
  21. A blazer + a plain-cut silky blouse + any bottoms.  Add a string of pearls.
  22. A blazer + a turtleneck + any bottoms.

Tweed blazer

  1. A brown tweed blazer + a blue plaid shirt + blue jeans.  Add a black belt + black pumps.
  2. A brown tweed jacket + a lavender top + blue jeans.  Add an ivory scarf.
  3. A tweed jacket + a classic white shirt + rugged jeans. If cool, add  a pretty-color cardigan over the shirt.  Add a couple of different long strands of pearls with a long gold chain + boots.
  4. A tweed jacket + cargo pants + a top of your choice.
  5. A tweed jacket + blue jeans + a top of your choice.  Add large hoop earrings.
  6. A tweed jacket + matching-color sweater and skirt or pants.

Tweed Pants

Tip #7:  Pair tweed pants with any blouse in your closet.

  3. A cream blouse + brown tweed pants + a brown blazer.
  4. A brown cardigan + a white or cream shirt + brown or tan tweed pants.  Add small hoop earrings.
  5. Tweed pants + a sweater set (sweater and cardigan or cardi and matching-color tank or camisole).  Add a statement necklace or pearl drop earrings.
  6. Tweed pants + a faux suede jacket + a lacy top.  Add gold and/or silver chain necklaces and pumps.

Pinstripe Blazer

  1. A navy pinstripe blazer + white, cream or tan pants.  Add a medallion or bead necklace.
  2. Navy pinstripe blazer + a gray t-shirt + destroyed skinny jeans.  Button one button on the blazer.  Add a watch or i.d. bracelet.
  3. A longer-length graphic t-shirt over pinstripe pants.  Add a long pendant.
  4. A pinstripe blazer + any color lace-trim camisole + jeans.  Add a belt.
  5. A pinstripe blazer + a sweater dress or other dress.  You might like to add a belt.
  6. A pinstripe blazer + blue jeans + a tank or tee.

Pinstripe Pants

  1. Evening:  A tuxedo jacket + a lacy camisole + pinstripe pants.  Add heels + a statement piece of jewelry.
  2. Evening:  A black sequin tank over black pinstripe pants.
  3. A white graphic t-shirt + black pinstripe pants.  Add black ankle boots with a heel.  You might like to add a pop of pink and/or crown your hair with a headband.
  4. A floral blouse + black pinstripe pants.  You might want to add a black vest.
  5. A black faux leather blazer + black pinstripe pants + a top of your choice.  Add black boots with a heel.
  6. A jean jacket + a longer-length navy tank top or top extender + navy, black or brown pinstripe pants.
  7. A draped white shirt messy tucked into black pinstripe pants.  Button the shirt low over a black camisole.  Add black platform or heeled boots.  If sunny, add sunglasses.
  8. Black pinstripe pant + an animal-print top that has black in it + a black faux-leather blazer. Add black shoes.

  9. A black sweater over black pinstripe pants, a navy sweater over navy pinstripe pants, a brown sweater over brown pinstripe pants, etc.
  10. Try a black tunic over black pinstripe pants.
  11. A red cashmere cardigan + black pinstripe pants.  Or use the colors you have.
  12. A white tee + black pinstripe pants + a printed topper, such as a black & gray Aztec-print hooded duster.
  13. A blue striped shirt + navy pinstripe pants.
  14. A camel or ivory sweater over brown or navy pinstripe pants.
  15. Pair pinstripe pants with a crochet top in a color that matches the pants.  Accessorize with Indian-style jewelry (i.e., feather earrings, feather hair ornament, turquoise necklace and/or bracelets, etc.)
  16. A wrap sweater or wrap top + pinstripe pants + pumps.

Trousers

Tip #8:  A black faux leather jacket such as a biker jacket + gray or black trousers = A suit!

  1. Evening: A gold blouse + black trousers.
  2. Spring/Summer:  An ivory wrap top + ivory trousers.  Add gold jewelry.
  3. A black tuxedo blazer + a navy silk shirt tucked into black trousers.  Add black pumps.
  4. A black turtleneck + black trousers, brown tweed trousers, etc.

  5. A silky ivory blouse + trousers.
  6. A printed blouse + trousers of one of the colors in the print.
  7. A cashmere cardigan worn as a top + trousers.  You might like to try red with beige or blue with gray.  Add loafers + a delicate necklace.
  8. Pair trousers with a t-shirt in a coordinating color.  Finish with lots of jewelry (i.e., matching necklace/earring/bracelet + gemstone pendant + gold chain.)
  9. Start with a sweater & trousers.  Finish the look by adding anything over it.

A Skirt from a Suit

  1. Evening:  A long skirt + a satin shirt + a metallic belt.
  2. Evening: A gold blouse + black skirt.
  3. A jean jacket + skirt + a shell (green or turquoise go with anything.)  Add a scarf + boots.
  4. A black turtleneck + a black skirt, or any color skirt.
  5. A silky white blouse + a black skirt.
  6. A printed blouse + a skirt in the same color as one of the colors in the print.
  7. Start with a sweater & a skirt. Complete the look by adding anything over it.

A Vest from a Three-Piece Suit

  1. A black vest + a black sleeveless top over blue jeans.  Add pumps, perhaps in an animal print!
  2. A brown vest + a short brown skirt + a black turtleneck.
  3. A long-sleeve white tee + jeans + a vest.  Add toned beads + hoop earrings + bangles + boots.  Or, add toned earrings + a cap.
  4. A pinstripe vest + matching pinstripe pants + a matching-color sleeveless top.  You might like to try adding clogs.
  5. A vest, pinstripe or not, any color + blue jeans + a top of your choice.  You might like to add some chain necklaces.
  6. A vest + a dress.
  7. A vest + a sweater + any bottoms.

Other Ways to Break Up a Suit

Tip #9:  With a colorful blazer, add a basic-color skirt or pants like black, or anything in a color that coordinates with the blazer.

  1. A button-down shirt + a vest + a blazer or jacket, preferably in wool or tweed.
  2. A brown suit jacket + a gray sweater (crew-neck or cardigan) + a beige skirt.
  3. Suit pants + a turtleneck.
  4. A brown pinstripe blazer or classic black blazer + a sweater over blue jeans, trousers or skirt — or just over a dress on the weekends.  You might like to add gold hoops and long gold chain necklaces.
  5. A brown blazer or suit jacket + ivory ruffled shirt + ivory pants or jeans.
  6. A blazer + a long slip dress.  Add loafers.
  7. A blazer + a sweater + full-leg pants or chiffon evening pants.  Add sneakers.
