How to Style a Velvet Jacket or Blazer Every Day of the Festive Season

This is the second in a series of posts on velvet pieces, from jackets to tops, skirts, pants, dusters and kimonos. The first post of this series was a style tip using velvet pants or skirts (you can find it HERE.) As usual, I give you plenty of outfit ideas to make it easy for you to get dressed with style every day. You can wear velvet for the holidays, in the evenings, any day just for you. I’ll show you how to style your velvet jacket or blazer for every day of the festive season. Treat yourself to this soft material any time and especially during hard times. Age doesn’t matter.

Alternative types of material and jacket styles

As a casual alternative, you can substitute velveteen or velour.  A black velvet blazer is a classic staple. If you feel better in navy, feel free to substitute that and think of it as your new black. And if you don’t go to many fancy events, you can get just as much use out of a casual version such as a kimono jacket, bomber jacket or even a jean jacket in velvet.

Here’s What I’ll Cover

I’ll start with evening and holiday outfit combinations because that’s when we automatically think of wearing a velvet jacket. Then I will go on to special events, then business looks and then I will give you outfit combinations that are more casual. I will end with other ways to wear velvet jackets or blazers for any variety of situations.

But first, let me note the basic formula for wearing a velvet jacket or blazer and then give you a quick style tip:

• Basic formula:  wear a velvet jacket or blazer with a white shirt or blouse and jeans.
• Tip:  Wear a velvet jacket or blazer with any top and your favorite jeans. Then add any scarf you like.

How to Style a Velvet Jacket or Blazer

Holiday

Here are a couple of ideas, but you can use the outfit combinations from any of the categories below for the holidays.

1. A lace turtleneck + a velvet jacket or blazer + any bottoms. Add gold.
2. A jewel-color dress + a black velvet jacket or blazer. Add silver or gold earrings. You might like to add a scarf to match the dress.

Evening

1. Evening cover:  Wear a velvet jacket or blazer as an evening cover over a dress.
2. A velvet jacket or blazer + any kind of skirt, including chiffon, or a pair of dark denim jeans + a fancy camisole, satin tank or lacy knit tank. Add dressy heels + a small evening bag.
3. A velvet jacket or blazer over a dress, whether long or short. Especially helpful over a bare dress.
4. A velvet jacket or blazer + a slip dress. If needed, add an underlayer for the slip dress that matches the color of the jacket.
5. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a black sheath dress. Add sheer black stockings + black heels + earrings. Wear your hair up.

   

6. A black velvet blazer or jacket + a sequined top + black pants. Add statement earrings and heels.
7. A black maxi dress + a black velvet jacket or blazer. Add a black statement necklace + a belt.
8. A navy velvet jacket or blazer + a sweater + gray flannel trousers.
9. A velvet jacket or blazer + a sweater + wool trousers.
10. A velvet jacket or blazer + silk pants in a matching or toned color.

    

11. A black or blue velvet jacket or blazer + a feminine white tunic (lace, chiffon, sheer, embellished, ruffled, etc.) + black or blue skinnies. Add black heeled booties + some delicate pendants and maybe a choker.
12. A velvet jacket or blazer + a matching-color sweater + silk pants in a toned color (i.e., black velvet jacket and navy silk pants.)
13. A black or navy velvet jacket or blazer + a satin blouse + dark denim. Add earrings. You might also like to add a black belt with a jeweled buckle.
14. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a jewel-color lace turtleneck + black bottoms.
15. A ruffled blouse inside a short gray skirt + a black velvet jacket or blazer.  Add a jeweled chain belt (garnets would be great here) + a matching broach + a jeweled barrette + pearl & crystal earrings + patterned stockings + ankle boots.  Put your hair up with ornaments.

Easy Evening

1. Sexy easy evening:  A black velvet jacket or blazer + a lacy black bare camisole + brown tweed trousers. Add a brown belt + brown sandals + gold jewelry.
2. A velvet jacket or blazer + a lace top front-tucked into blue jeans. Add an embellished belt + beads + a short, delicate necklace + gold hoop earrings + a dinner ring. You may want to style your hair into a messy updo.
3. A black or navy velvet jacket or blazer + a winter white cashmere sweater + gray flannel pants. Add gold belt and evening sandals.
4. A black velvet blazer + a black blouse + blue jeans. Add long dangle earrings + a gold scarf.
5. A black velvet jacket or blazer fastened over a red scoop-neck top + blue jeans.  Add a gold, statement necklace + stud earrings.  Curl your hair and pin it up.

   

6. A velvet blazer or jacket + a lacy and/or silky camisole or tank top + jeans. Add gold accessories.
7. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a ruby red shell + blue jeans.  Add a statement necklace with crystals + crystal studs.
8. A velvet jacket + a printed silk top messy-tucked inside blue jeans.  Add an embellished belt + a colorful scarf twisted around your neck + long, dangling earrings.
9. A leopard-print tunic + dark denim or distressed skinny jeans + a velvet jacket or blazer. Add ankle boots.

Special Events

1. Business dinners, restaurants, art exhibit opening, theater:  A velvet jacket or blazer + matching velvet skirt.
2. Brunch:  A velvet blazer or jacket + a solid t-shirt in a complementary color or a graphic tee + blue jeans. Add flats or sneakers.
3. Drinks at someone’s home, restaurant, theater, art gallery openings:  A velvet jacket or blazer + matching velvet pants.
4. Easy evening dinner suit look, restaurants, theater, etc.:  A velvet jacket or blazer + matching pants + a cashmere sweater. Add an evening belt + heels + gold bangles and earrings.
5. Dinner trouser suit:  A velvet jacket or blazer and matching pants + a pretty day blouse or bare sweater.
6. Dinner suit, theater, cocktails in a big city:  A velvet jacket or blazer + a matching velvet skirt + a metallic tank top. Add an evening belt + heels + an evening bag + metallic jewelry.

Business

1. Business casual:  A velvet blazer or jacket + a white shirt + blue jeans + black loafers. Add bangles + a long chain or cord (or two) with one or more gemstones.
2. A black velvet jacket or blazer + tan pants + a cream silky shirt + a black wool cardigan over the shirt. Belt the cardigan closed with a one-inch wide leather belt.
3. A dress shirt + a cardigan + a black velvet jacket or blazer + black jeans or dress pants. Add a slick pair of black ankle boots.

Casual

1. For a walk in the woods to a sidewalk cafe:  A lace top + blue jeans + a velvet jacket or blazer. Add booties + sunglasses if sunny.
2. A velvet jacket or blazer + a plaid shirt tucked into jeans. Add a belt and/or a statement necklace.
3. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a white shirt + black pants. Add a pop of color with a knitted scarf.
4. A velvet jacket or blazer + a plain t-shirt + blue jeans.

   

5. A velvet jacket or blazer + a white Henley top + blue jeans. Add a necklace, earrings and/or big ring. A velvet jacket or blazer + a jean skirt or jeans + a top of your choice.
6. A velvet jacket or blazer + a striped tank top + jeans. You might also like to add brogues + a fedora.
7. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a black polka-dot top + black or blue jeans. Add small earrings.
8. A velvet blazer + flared trousers + a printed top. Add belt and boots, a warm scarf (wrap it around neck and tuck in with nothing hanging down) + jewelry.

   

9. A velvet bomber jacket over a dress. You could even use a summer dress or body-conscious dress since the jacket is so warm.
10. A velvet jacket or blazer + a blue tank top or shirt + blue jeans. Add a scarf.
11. A velvet jacket or blazer + a white shirt over blue jeans. Add a belt and flats.
12. Jeans and a tee + a velvet jacket or blazer. Belt the jeans. Add a printed scarf + a few long strands of beads + a chain necklace + a couple of rings. You might also want to add a knit hat.

More Ways to Wear a Velvet Jacket or Blazer

1. A printed blouse + a velvet jacket or blazer of a color that is in the blouse + blue jeans. Or, you could wear a blue velvet jacket or blazer to go with the blue jeans and the blouse can be any color print. Add dangle earrings + a big watch + boots.
2. A velvet jacket or blazer + a beaded top. Add bottoms of your choice.
3. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a short faux leather skirt + a lacy camisole in a pretty color. Add high-heeled booties + a statement ring.
4. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a gray top + gray stretch pants.
5. A black or blue velvet jacket or blazer + a black or blue blouse + black or blue jeans. Add a belt + a couple of pins on lapel.

   

6. A velvet jacket or blazer + a tunic in a matching color, embellished or not + blue jeans.
7. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a black floral skirt + a top of a color that’s in the skirt. Add boots.
8. A velvet jacket or blazer + a satin camisole + jeans. Add a gold bead necklace + a gold belt.
9. A velvet jacket or blazer buttoned over a long silky camisole over a floral maxi skirt. Add a y-necklace + earrings, or statement earrings with a delicate necklace.
10. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a black shell top + gray pants. Add lots of pearls.

    

11. A velvet blazer or jacket + a black top + black faux leather pants. Add black boots + a gold chain necklace.
12. A velvet jacket or blazer with matching velvet pants + a camisole.
13. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a black lacy shell top + brown pants.
14. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a long-sleeve white t-shirt + black pinstripe pants. Add rhinestone brooches. Belt the jacket with a wide black or navy belt.
15. A black velvet jacket or blazer + black pants + a white shell top. Add long chains.

    

16. A velvet jacket or blazer + a t-shirt + printed pants. Add layered necklaces.
17. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a white cotton shirt + black jeans. Add colorful beads + black boots.
18. A velvet jacket or blazer + a white shirt + blue jeans. Add earrings + heels or boots.
19. A black or navy velvet jacket or blazer + a blouse tucked into blue jeans. Add black pumps and purse.
20. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a turquoise embellished t-shirt + black jeans. Add a black belt.

    

21. A colored velvet blazer + a black turtleneck + black skirt or pants. Add a necklace + a black belt.
22. A black velvet jacket or blazer + blue jeans + a pretty color turtleneck, lace or not.
23. Any color velvet jacket or blazer and any color turtleneck + bottoms of your choice. You may like to add brown pumps.
24. A velvet jacket or blazer + a blue camisole + blue jeans. Add bling. You might want to add a belt.
25. A velvet jacket or blazer + a matching-color top + blue jeans. Add a blue tassel pendant.

    

26. A black or navy velvet jacket or blazer + a leopard-print top + blue jeans. Add gold or leopard-print flats + a flower pin between the front belt loops + a black hat.
27. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a winter white camisole + blue leggings or skinnies. Add a multi-strand or layered necklace.
28. A black velvet jacket or blazer + velvet leggings in a jewel color. You might like to add socks and heels.
29. A velvet jacket or blazer + a ruffled shirt + jeans. Add a choker. Wear your hair in an up-do.

    

30. A velvet jacket or blazer over a shirt over a long-sleeve t-shirt + knit pants. Let both shirts and cuff layers show.
31. A velvet jacket or blazer + a sweater + jeans, from distressed to dark denim. You might add sneakers.
32. A black velvet jacket or blazer + a white top + gray pants.
